BOSTON, Mass.—Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) became the 30th woman in NCAA history to reach the 100-goal milestone early on and freshman Marina Kelly (Whitman, Mass.) added two late goals to help lead UMass Boston women's soccer (9-4-5) to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Bridgewater State University (6-10) Tuesday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field.
Ledin became the first Beacon and first Little East Conference player to reach the 100-goal mark at 6:22 of the first half. She received a pass from fellow senior Brittany Castillo (Yarmouth, Mass.) and slipped through two defenders, before sending a high toe-touch shot into the top-left corner for her 19th goal of the season.
"I am so very proud to have witnessed Krista's magnificent feat," head coach Amy Zombeck said. "You have to be a special player to reach such a significant milestone."
The Bridgewater, Mass. native is the active NCAA leader in both goals (100) and points (230) and is the first woman to reach 100 goals since Elaine Gerry of Edgewood College in 2012. She currently sits tied for 16th in NCAA Division III women's soccer history in goals and tied for 19th in career points.
Kelly helped ensure it would be a very special day for her teammate, as the freshman midfielder scored twice within the final 40 minutes in the 3-1 win.
Senior goalie Dani Perkins (Murrieta, Calif.) posted six saves on seven shots in the victory.
Bridgewater State junior Mackenzie Hatfield registered the only goal of the day for the Bears, while junior goalie Kristen Reardon made 12 saves for the visitors.
UMass Boston dominated in shots (34-12) and shots on goal (16-7), while holding a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Ledin got the milestone out of the way early, as she scored on her second chance of the afternoon. Castillo came up with a steal off of a free kick and lofted a through-ball ahead for Ledin. Ledin headed the ball in front of her with her first touch and raced on to the ball with two defenders sandwiching her. Before either player could clear it away, the senior forward fired a soft shot over Reardon and just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.
UMass Boston made it 2-0 just five minutes into the second half, when freshman Hannah Petersen (Plymouth, Mass.) found Kelly in the box. Petersen sent a long throw-in to the top of the 18-yard box-where Kelly shrugged off a defender and then took a hard touch off the outside of her foot that bounced pass Reardon and just inside the far post.
The Beacons nearly tacked on an all-important third goal moments later, but Elisa Brook's (San Diego, Calif.) header was cleared off the line by Bridgewater midfielder Kaitlin Delaney, after it had gotten by a diving Reardon.
Hatfield cut the Beacons' lead in half at 71:51, when the junior corralled a high cross into the box from Lauren Bandoian, and sent a hard bouncer just past Perkins into the far netting for her team-leading 13th goal of the year.
Ledin put the game away in the 80th minute, behind some unselfish play. The senior received a pass 30-yard from goal and dribbled by her defender into the box, but instead of shooting, she passed to an on-rushing Kelly and the freshman one-timed a shot over Reardon's head for a 3-1 lead.
UMass Boston will close out the regular-season Saturday at 1pm at Rhode Island College. With a victory, UMass Boston can ensure themselves at least a share of the Little East Conference Regular Season Title. The Beacons need to defeat the Anchorwomen and have intra-state rival UMass Dartmouth tie or defeat Western Connecticut State University, to earn the outright title.
