PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Despite Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) setting the program record for career singles victories, UMass Boston women's tennis couldn't keep up with Johnson & Wales University, as the Wildcats downed the Beacons 8-1 at the Moses Brown Courts Wednesday afternoon.
With her 7-5, 6-4 victory at number two singles, Kloczewiak moved past Denise B. Ridges ('06) into sole possession of first place all-time in UMass Boston history with her 23rd career singles victory. The senior from Newton, Mass. already held the school records for total victories (51) and doubles wins (28).
The rest of the afternoon was dominated by the host Wildcats-who took a 3-0 lead after doubles play.
Ansley Sego and Gabrielle Longo downed Kelsey Shea (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Vicky Woytowicz (Springfield, Mass.) 8-2 at number three doubles to open the match. Moments later Samantha Jo Barr and Stephanie Piperis defeated the Beacons' top pair of Nuha Muntasser (Braintree, Mass.) and Kloczewiak 8-3.
Johnson & Wales finished off doubles action with an 8-4 win at number two doubles, as Darcy Predieri and Morgan Thompson outlasted Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Solveig Castelli (Precojo, France).
Singles play would be more of the same, as the Beacons struggled against their Great Northeast Athletic Conference foes.
Castelli had little luck in her number five singles match against Victoria Ricciardi, as the Beacons' sophomore fell 6-0, 6-0.
Johnson & Wales sealed the victory with a win at number three singles, as Thompson downed Counts 6-1, 6-0.
The Wildcats added to their lead with a victory at number six singles, as Emily Glass defeated Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.), who was making her collegiate debut, 6-0, 6-1.
Predieri pushed the lead to 7-0 with a win at fourth singles, as she knocked off Nurcin Celebi (Istanbul, Turkey) 6-3, 6-0.
Johnson & Wales capped off their scoring for the afternoon at number one singles, where Jo Barr defeated Muntasser 6-3, 6-1.
The Beacons avoided the shutout at number two singles, as Kloczewiak picked her second singles win of the year and made history, with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Piperis.
UMass Boston will return to action Saturday when they host Worcester State University at 1 p.m. in their Little East Conference opener.
