BOSTON, Mass.--Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored twice and UMass Boston dominated Western Connecticut State University from start to finish, as the Beacons earned a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center in a Little East Conference Championship Game rematch.
Playing for the time since the Beacons 1-0 victory in last year's LEC Title game, UMass Boston came out aggressive and held a 25-6 shot advantage, earning the Beacons just their third win in 22 tries against the Colonials.
With the victory, UMass Boston moves into a tie for second place in the conference with a 3-1 Little East mark and an 8-4 overall record. The loss drops the Colonials to 9-5 and 3-1 in Little East play.
Saturday's contest also served as the Beacons "Think Pink" Game and Alumni Day. UMass Boston honored the families of five former and current players who have had a family member affected by breast cancer before the game and sold merchandise throughout the contest to raise money to find a cure.
Ledin the way for the Beacons with her league-leading 13th and 14th goals of the year, while Tayla Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) and Brittany Castillo (Yarmouth, Mass.) each picked up a goal of their own on the afternoon.
Four different Beacons were credited with assists, as Amanda Pugliese (Pembroke, Mass.), Sam Cristoforo (Rockland, Mass.) Kara Peters (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Hannah Lear (Plymouth, Mass.) were all credited with helpers.
Kristen Spain (Quincy, Mass.) continued to be rock solid in net, as the junior made three stops to earn her fifth shutout of the year.
Freshman Alison Rettenmeir took the loss despite making a career-high 12 saves on 16 shots for the Colonials.
UMass Boston scored their lone marker of the first stanza, when Castillo headed home a Pugliese corner kick at the 28:38 mark. After recording eight assists in her first two seasons, Castillo has had a huge offensive season for the Beacons, recording three goals and three assists, including her first game-winning marker in today's contest.
Ledin doubled the Beacons lead just seconds into the second half, when she took a through ball pass from Cristoforo and slid it by Rettenmeir at 45:31 of the contest.
Five minutes later UMass Boston pushed the lead to 3-0, when Lear fed Ledin on a pass through the midfield and the Beacons junior forward finished past a diving Rettenmeir.
The Beacons recorded their fourth and final tally at 79:53, when Andrews received a pass from Peters and sent a curling ball into the left side of the net for a 4-0 lead.
UMass Boston held a 25-6 shot advantage for the contest and a huge 16-3 edge in shots on goal. The Beacons also mustered eight corner kicks, compared to just three for the Colonials.
UMass Boston will return to action with a rare Monday contest, as the Beacons will travel to Salve Regina University Monday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
