Baseball Pounds Gordon For Third Win of the Week

Box Score

WENHAM, Mass. – With a combined 14 hits including a two-run shot from Matt Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.) baseball (11-9) notched their third win of the week as they pounded Gordon College (7-13) for a 15-8 win Thursday afternoon at J Tec White Stadium.

Consiglio's homer marked the first of the year for the junior and the second in two-days for UMass Boston, as Jack DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) crushed a two-run shot in yesterday's loss to Western New England University.

A slew of players stepped onto the diamond in Thursday's non-conference game.  In total the Beacons bullpen featured six different players.  Getting the victory was Matt Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) as the sophomore went 2 2/3 without giving up a run and only one hit.  Every player that stepped on the hill recorded at least one strikeout with Ryan Augustine (Burlington, Conn.) posting a team-best five K's.

Also having a day at the plate for the Beacons was senior outfielder Mark McCormack who recorded two of UMass' five doubles.  Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.), Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) and Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.) each recorded an extra base hit to help the Beacons earn at least one run in all but three innings.

UMass wasted little time ending the scoreless draw as they tacked on three early runs on RBI hits from McCormack, DeBiase, and Moquette.  Gordon College would then got on the scoreboard in the third with two runs of their own to make it a one-run game.

LaPaglia's double in the third would give the Beacons their fourth run of the afternoon to push their lead back to two.  However that lead would not last as Gordon would get three runs in the fourth off of one swing.

Down but definitely not out UMass scored nine straight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 13-5.  They would get their final two runs in the top of the ninth, while Gordon was held to just one in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Baseball returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Western Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference twinbill.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
