Three-Run Ninth Gives Baseball Non-Conference Win over Westfield St.

Box Score

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Tied 7-7 going into the top of the ninth with two outs on the scoreboard and runners on first and third, a two-run double by Charles LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) along with an RBI single from Pat Lynch (Middletown, R.I.) baseball (9-8) pulled out a 10-7 non-conference win over Westfield State University (9-9) Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.

LaPaglia's game-winning double would score Mike Mattei (Spencer, Mass.) and Kyle Thebado (Marlborough, Mass.).  Mattei reached base following an error by the right fielder, and Thebado was pinch running for Jack DeBiase (Prospect, Conn.) who sparked the ninth inning rally following a single left field.

After Mattei and Thebado touched home plate and with LaPaglia on second, Lynch would come in a drive a line shot up the middle to give the Beacons a three-run cushion.

Once the Owls got out of the inning, they stepped up to the plate looking to tie the score.  However closer Jeff Thomas (Redwood City, Calif.) would not let that happen as struckout one and got two others to flyout securing the win and ending UMass Boston's three-game skid.

On the day UMass totaled 10 hits, with Collin Keefer (Charlotte, N.C.) leading the way as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored, and a double.  Outfielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) was just as solid at the plate as he drove in three runs on two hits, while also accounting for one of the Beacons runs. Left fielder Nick Grassetti (Agawam, Mass.) crushed his first triple of the year, which scored one run.  The junior also crossed home plate twice in the victory.

Picking up his first win of the season was Matt Dziok (Southampton, Mass.), who allowed just one hit in the seventh and eighth innings while also striking out two.  Getting the start and going 5 2/3 inning was freshman Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.).  During his time on the mound the righty retired eight batters and of the six runs that were scored, only two were earned on five hits.

Following a one run bottom of the first from Westfield State, the Beacons tacked on four runs in the top half of the second.  Keefer drove in the first run of the day for the UMass Boston on a double down the left field line.  McCormack would follow suit on a two RBI single up the middle to extend the Beacons to 3-1.  A Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass.) single would cap off the inning as it scored McCormack to make it a three-run ball game.

The Owls would cut the Beacons lead to two in the bottom of the second, but that would not last as UMass scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead.

Unable to tack on some insurance runs as the game went on, the Owls would tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth with five runs, all of which were unearned.

Despite the rally the Beacons did not falter as they used clutch hitting and solid pitching in the ninth to earn the win.

Baseball returns to action tomorrow when they face Framingham State University at 7 p.m. at Malden Catholic High School.  Another schedule note; Wednesday's game with Western New England University will be played at Western New England and will start at 3:30 p.m.
