BOSTON, MA - Freshman attackman Dean Driscoll (Cohasset, MA) and junior midfielder Pat Driscoll (Hingham, MA) netted five and four goals respectively to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston lacrosse team over Emerson College, 14-7, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. With the decision the Beacons are now 2-3 overall while the Lions fall to 0-5.
The Driscolls combined to tally the first five goals of the contest as UMass Boston jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the first quarter. Freshman attackman John Perro (Northbridge, MA) assisted on all three of D. Driscoll's scores while freshman attackman Peyton McKechnie (Cheshire, CT) and sophomore midfielder Rob Tagle (Freehold, NJ) each picked up a helper on P. Driscoll's strikes. Senior attackman Josh Anderson (Underhill Center, VT) finished a pass from freshman midfielder Eric Colleran (Fairfield, CT) at 6:20 to put Emerson on the board and then freshman attackman Brady Darragh (Bayport, NY) added a second goal just 14 seconds later to help the Lions pull back to 5-2. The Beacons tacked on three scores in the final two minutes of the opening frame, however, to take a commanding 8-2 lead into the first break. Freshman attackman Tommy Petitti (Quincy, MA) started the run with an assist from McKechnie, who then added an unassisted tally at 1:06 followed nine seconds later by junior midfielder Rob Uhrig's (Boston, MA) score from P. Driscoll.
Each team managed a goal in the second quarter to send the contest to halftime, 9-3. Freshman attackman Tyler Hastings (Levittown, NY) from Colleran accounted for the Emerson point, while D. Driscoll and McKechnie hooked up for the UMass Boston marker.
Up a man early in the third quarter, Perro extended the Beacons advantage, 10-3, on a pass from P. Driscoll. Hastings and freshman midfielder Max Smith (Gillette, NJ) answered for the Lions, but the Driscolls each then potted a goal with assists from Petitti and Uhrig to reestablish a seven-point lead, 12-5. Emerson's Anderson chipped in his second of the contest with four seconds left in the stanza.
In the fourth quarter, D. Driscoll picked up the helper on P. Driscoll's final goal of the game and then Uhrig hooked up with Tagle to make it 14-6 with 12:30 to go. Colleran added one final score for the Lions with the assist going to junior attackman Dan Gold (Randolph, NJ).
In net, senior goalkeeper Peter Towe (Hockessin, DE) earned the win for UMass Boston with 11 saves to improve to 2-2 this season, while Emerson sophomore goalie Zoe Fisk (Pittston, MA) made 14 saves and fell to 0-3.
Both teams return to action Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. when the Beacons host Salem State University for their Little East Conference season-opener and the Lions welcome Mount St. Vincent College.
