Buzzards Bay, Mass. (March 27, 2026) – UMass Boston men's lacrosse (4-4, 1-1 Little East Conference) mounted a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback but ultimately fell 16-15 in overtime to Massachusetts Maritime Academy (6-2, 1-1 Little East Conference) in an LEC contest.
The Beacons faced an early uphill battle, trailing 4-2 after the first quarter and 9-4 at halftime as the Buccaneers capitalized on turnovers and controlled possession through the faceoff circle. Despite a pair of goals from Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) and Matthew Konareski (Guilford, Conn.), Mass Maritime steadily built a five-goal advantage.
A more assertive approach after halftime saw Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.) and Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, Conn.) chip away at the deficit, but the Beacons remained down 12-7 entering the final frame. In the fourth quarter, UMass Boston delivered its highest-scoring period of the season, outscoring the Buccaneers 8-3. Key man-up goals from Hutchings and Schartner, along with tallies by Konareski and Brayden MacLean (Stow, Mass.), sparked a furious run. MacLean netted the game-tying goal with 53 seconds left, forcing overtime after the Beacons erased a 15-13 deficit in the final five minutes.
Despite the momentum, UMass Boston was unable to generate a shot in the extra session, as UMass Boston won just 12 of 35 draws, and turnovers in the opening half proved costly. The Beacons' late offensive surge and defensive stands, however, highlighted the team's resilience in conference play.
