Beacons Erupt for Season-High 30 Goals in Rout of Castleton

BOSTON, MA (April 8, 2026) — UMass Boston men's lacrosse (6-5, 2-1 Little East Conference) delivered a historic offensive performance Wednesday, setting a new season high with 30 goals in a dominant 30-8 victory over Vermont State University Castleton in a Little East Conference matchup at James Cotter Field. The 22-goal margin of victory was also a season best for the Beacons, who won their second consecutive conference game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons set the tone early and never let up. Brayden MacLean (Stow, Mass.) scored twice in the opening 90 seconds to give UMass Boston a quick 2-0 lead. After Castleton tied the game at 2-2, the Beacons seized control with a seven-goal barrage to close the period. Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.) scored three of his five goals during the run, helping propel UMass Boston to a 9-3 advantage after the first quarter.

The onslaught continued in the second quarter, with UMass Boston outscoring the visitors 7-1 to build a commanding 16-4 lead by halftime. Goals from Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, NY), Matt Laverty (Barnstable, Mass.) and Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, Conn.) highlighted the period as the Beacons' offense operated at peak efficiency.

UMass Boston did not relent in the second half, adding eight more goals in the third quarter and six in the fourth. The team's depth was on full display, with 17 different players finding the back of the net. The Beacons' dominance was fueled by complete control of possession, winning nearly 86 percent of all faceoffs and executing a perfect 18-for-18 performance on clear attempts.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • MacLean led all players with a game-high eight points on six goals and two assists. Schartner finished with seven points from five goals and two assists, while Hutchings served as the primary facilitator with a team-high three assists to go with two goals.
