MANSFIELD, Conn. (March 23, 2026) – UMass Boston men's lacrosse started and ended strong for their first Little East Conference win of the season, defeating Eastern Connecticut State 14-10 on the road Monday afternoon.
How It Happened
The Beacons wasted no time asserting themselves, racing to a 3-0 lead in just over 90 seconds, shooting a perfect 3 for 3 and finishing the first quarter with a commanding 6-2 lead. The scoring started with a quick strike from Jaden Cronin (East Bridgewater, Mass.), set up by Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), and continued with tallies from Jack Schartner (Bolton, Mass.) and Tyler Hilgert (Guilford, Conn.). UMass Boston's transition game and ground ball pursuit kept the Warriors off balance, and the Beacons' offense capitalized on early turnovers and possessions.
Eastern Connecticut State answered in the second quarter, using a 4-1 run to cut the Beacons' lead to just 7-6 at halftime. The Warriors forced several turnovers to build momentum, but a timely goal from Hutchings, assisted by Hilgert, preserved a slim UMass Boston advantage heading into the break.
Momentum swung back and forth in the third quarter as the Warriors managed to tie the contest at 8-8. UMass Boston responded with a critical four-goal run, sparked by Patrick Dwinnells (Ashland, Mass.), who broke the tie. Hutchings continued his strong outing with two more goals, each set up by Schartner and Hilgert, and Hilgert capped the quarter with a man-up goal, restoring a 12-8 Beacons lead.
In the fourth, UMass Boston protected its lead with disciplined defense and key possessions. Cole Allan (Falmouth, Maine) and Hilgert each scored to keep the Warriors at bay, while Nolen Beauregard (Walpole, Mass.) anchored the defense with ground ball dominance and multiple caused turnovers. The Beacons held firm down the stretch, securing a vital conference victory.
