Box Score
APPLETON, WI - Senior first baseman Jeremy Richter (Rosholt, WI) went 4-4 with two runs batted in to lead the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point over University of Massachusetts Boston, 13-3, in an elimination game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III College World Series today at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Applelton, WI. The Pointers improve to 34-17 on the season, while the Beacons finish their season with a 32-17 mark. WI-Stevens Point will be in action again when they take on the loser of the Linfield College/State University of New York Cortland match-up, tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point stranded a pair of UMass Boston runners on second and third base in the top of the first inning and turned the ebb of momentum of ending the threat into a full-fledged wave in the bottom of the frame with six runs. Junior shortstop Eric Fritz (Custer, WI) drew a one-out walk before Richter dumped a single into left field and advanced to second on the throw to third base as Fritz slid in just ahead of the tag. Senior left fielder Sam Spurney (Manitowoc, WI) plated the first run of the morning for the Pointers with a sacrifice fly to center as Richter took third on the play. Sophomore third baseman Justin Jirschele (Clintonville, WI) worked a walk and junior designated hitter Jordan Rennicke (Mequon, WI) followed with a single through the right side to give WI-Stevens Point a 2-0 lead. Freshman center fielder Dan Douglas (East Troy, WI) reached on a walk to load the bases and junior catcher Steve Considine (Portage, WI) struck the big blow with a three-run double down the right field line to increase the Pointers' advantage to 5-0. Junior second baseman Travis Tuschen (Sun Prairie, WI) was the eighth straight batter to reach base safely in the inning for WI-Stevens Point with a run-scoring single blooped into left center field to bring home the sixth run of the frame and chase UMB starting pitcher Danny Gomez (East Boston, MA) from the game. Freshman reliever Daniel Heefner (Tracy, CA) got the final out of the inning to end the scoring blitz.
The Pointers added three more runs on a pair of home runs in the fourth when Fritz launched his seventh home run of the year over the left field wall. Richter was hit with the next pitch and Spurney made the Beacons pay with a two-run blast well over the left field wall for his eighth homer of the year and a 9-0 WI-Stevens Point lead.
UMass Boston broke into the scoring column in the fifth when junior Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) reached on a fielder's choice with two outs, moved to second on an errant throw and to third on an interference call on the Pointers' shortstop, before scoring on a single to right center by junior Tim Fontaine (Worcester, MA) to make it 9-1. Junior Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) followed with a single through the right side and senior Jeff Outzen (San Mateo, CA) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Beacons, but WI-Stevens Point junior starting pitcher Scott Williams (Baraboo, WI) induced a ground out to second to get out of the inning. The Pointers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning when Tuschen smacked a double down the left field line and trotted home ahead of senior Brad Archambeau's (Watertown, WI) seventh home run of the season. The blast knocked Heefner out of the game and senior lefty Michael Andriano (Massapequa, NY) came on for the Beacons. Fritz and Richter greeted him with back-to-back doubles to give WI-Stevens Point a 12-1 margin.
UMass Boston tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings when freshman shortstop Matt Consiglio (Southbury, CT) drew a one-out walk and senior left fielder Drew Tambling (Worcester, MA) followed with a single to right center in the sixth. The Beacons were able to score Consiglio when sophomore center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) grounded a ball to first, but the throw to second to get the middle runner was low and everyone was safe as UMB put up its second run. Outzen worked a one-out walk in the seventh and sophomore third baseman Mike Mattei (Spencer, MA) singled into right field, before Consiglio later delivered with a single down the left field line to cut the deficit to 12-3 for the Beacons. The Pointers got a run back in the seventh when Archambeau drilled a double to left center and later scored on a two-out bloop single behind first off the bat of Richter to increase the lead to 13-3.
UMB threatened in the eighth when it loaded the bases on a single by Walsh and consecutive walks by Fontaine and Reinfurt, but senior reliever Ryan Povlick (Greendale, WI) induced a double play to end the threat and strand the Beacons' 14th and 15th runners of the afternoon.
Williams earned the victory for WI-Stevens Point, allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits and three walks, while striking out four to improve to 11-3 on the season, while Gomez suffered the loss for UMass Boston, giving up six runs on four hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning pitched and falls to 3-2.
Two of Richter's four hits were doubles, while Archambeau, Fritz and Considine all collected two hits and knocked in multiple runs for the Pointers. Walsh led the Beacons, going 3-5 with his 21st double and a run scored, while Tambling and Mattei each rapped out two hits.
