AUBURNDALE, FL - Junior shortstop Adam Marquit (New York, NY) singled home the winning run in the 10th inning to give the Bowdoin College baseball team a 10-9 victory over University of Massachusetts Boston today at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, FL in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Polar Bears win their sixth straight game to improve to 8-1 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 6-3.
Freshman Drew LoRusso (Medfield, MA) came into the game as a defensive replacement at second base in the ninth inning for Bowdoin and drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the 10th inning. He stole second and then scored the winning run on a line drive to center by Marquit for a 10-9 edge.
The Polar Bears faced a five-run deficit with one out in the eighth, but sent 12 men to the plate and scored six times in the inning. Marquit worked a walk and senior catcher Reid Auger (Billerica, MA) followed with a run-scoring double down the right field line. Junior first baseman Dan Hicks (New York, NY) cracked a double of his own to center to put both runners in scoring position. Junior Brendan Garner (Swampscott, MA) singled through the left side to plate both runs and pull Bowdoin to within 8-6. Junior Brett Gorman (Bedford, NY) then chopped a double down the left field line to put two more runners in scoring position, before junior left fielder Matt Ruane (Belmont, MA) knocked home another run with a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 8-7. Freshman Tim McGarry (Kennett Square, PA) drew a pinch-walk to force in the tying run and Marquit gave Bowdoin a 9-8 edge for its first lead since the first inning.
UMass Boston sent the contest into extra innings when it scored a run in the top of the ninth and held the Polar Bears scoreless in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore right fielder Ty Buccetti (Wallingford, CT) was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth, went to second on a balk, advanced to third on a ground out and later scored on a fielder's choice by junior second baseman Ryan Walsh (Newton, MA) to knot the score at 9-9.
Bowdoin cracked the scoring column first in the bottom of the first inning when Hicks crushed a triple to right center and scored on a single to center by Garner for a 1-0 lead. The Beacons responded with a pair of runs in the second when senior DH Danny Gomez (East Boston, MA) and Buccetti came through with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles for a 2-1 lead. The Polar Bears began the bottom of the frame with three straight singles from Ruane, junior right fielder Joe Comizio (Vienna, VA) and freshman Oliver Van Zant (Westport, CT) to tie the game at 2-2. Marquit drew one of his three walks on the afternoon to load the bases with no outs, but Beacons' starting pitcher Mike Andriano (Massapequa, NY) got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a line out back to him to end the threat.
UMass Boston scored three runs in the fourth on a two-run double by sophomore center fielder Mark McCormack (Shelton, CT) and a run-scoring double by Walsh to give the Beacons a 5-2 advantage. The double by Walsh was the 34th of his career to break the school record of held by Adam Waxman (2000-03). UMass Boston added another run in the fifth, courtesy of an RBI single by Gomez for a 6-2 bulge. Bowdoin closed to within 6-3 in the bottom of the inning when Garner led off with a double and later scored on a single to center by freshman Dan Findley (Duxbury, MA). The Beacons tacked on two more runs with an unearned run in the seventh and a run-scoring single from junior first baseman Connor Reinfurt (Manchester, NH) to take an 8-3 advantage.
Sophomore closer R.J. Shea (Barrington, RI) earned the win for the Polar Bears, hurling a hitless 10th inning with a strikeout, while junior shortstop/reliever Dan Noonan (Westport, MA) was the tough luck loser for the Beacons, yielding a run on two hits and two walks in two-plus innings of work. Andriano finished with day giving up three runs on 10 hits and a walk, while striking out four for UMass Boston. Senior starting pitcher Joe Pace (Newburyport, MA) allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits and five walks and struck out three in five and two-thirds innings for Bowdoin.
Gomez led the Beacons' bats, going 3-5 with two RBI for his first three collegiate hits, while McCormack and Walsh each had a pair of hits and two RBI. Auger, Garner and Gorman all racked up three hits for the Polar Bears, while Garner knocked in three runs.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Monday, March 22 when it travels to Bridgewater, MA to take on Bridgewater State College, while Bowdoin takes on Allegheny College for a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow in Florida.
