BOSTON, Mass. (April 6, 2026) – UMass Boston Baseball (13-9, 3-1 Little East Conference) captured an 8-7 walk-off victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Monday night at Monan Park, erasing a one-run deficit with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
How it Happened:
WPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a hit batter and a walk to force in two runs. UMass Boston answered in the bottom half when Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) singled home Breon Parker Jr. (Springfield, Mass.) to make it 2-1.
The Beacons tied it in the second on a Chase Beloin (Avon, Conn.) groundout before WPI retook the lead on an error to go up 3-2. UMass Boston seized control in the third with sacrifice flies from Ben Sherry (Fall River, Mass.) and Ryan Slack (Derby, Conn.) — the latter scoring on an unearned run — to go ahead 4-3.
WPI evened it again in the sixth when Chuck Cappello tripled and scored on a Jack Zawacki single. The Beacons responded in the bottom half when Wes Sturrup (Rochester, N.Y.) scored on a wild throw error to make it 5-4, then Gaer's sacrifice fly in the seventh plated Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) — who had stolen second and advanced to third on a catcher's error — to extend the lead to 6-4.
WPI stormed back in the eighth, with Jacob Wiberg's two-run triple and James DiGiovanni's RBI double producing three unearned runs to give the Engineers a 7-6 advantage.
In the ninth, Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Miles each drew walks and executed a double steal — Farnacci to third, Miles to second. Gaer grounded out to second, scoring Farnacci to tie it at 7-7. Pinch hitter Paden Larkins (Shelton, Conn.) then reached on a first baseman's error, allowing Miles to score the walk-off run.
Connor Curtis (Mansfield, Mass.)(1-1) earned the win, striking out three in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Mason Walls (0-1) took the loss.
