University of Massachusetts Boston Appoints Eric Mathieu, Esq. as Deputy Athletic Director for Athletics Development and Revenue Generation

Boston, MA — The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) has appointed Eric Mathieu, Esq. as Deputy Athletic Director for Athletics Development and Revenue Generation, a strategic leadership role designed to accelerate philanthropic growth and expand external engagement for UMass Boston Athletics. He will report directly to the Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics and Recreation and begins March 9.

Mathieu will lead a comprehensive and integrated revenue strategy encompassing major gifts, annual giving, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, and signature fundraising events. His mandate is clear: build sustainable, diversified revenue streams that fuel competitive excellence, enhance the student-athlete experience, and support long-term capital priorities.

Mathieu will oversee all athletics fundraising operations, including leadership of the Beacon Club (Athletics Annual Fund), Giving Day initiatives, alumni challenges, sport-specific campaigns, and premier events such as the Golf Classic, Hall of Fame celebration, and Senior Toast. He will also direct corporate partnership development, advancing naming rights, licensing opportunities, and strategic sponsorships aligned with institutional priorities. Working in close collaboration with the Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics and Recreation, he will cultivate major gift–level donors, expand philanthropic pipelines, and pursue transformational gifts to position UMass Boston Athletics for sustained growth.

In addition to external strategy, Mathieu will strengthen internal development infrastructure, mentor coaches and staff in donor engagement, enhance stewardship practices, and implement data-informed fundraising methodologies that drive measurable, increased year-over-year revenue performance.

Mathieu brings a multidisciplinary background spanning athletics leadership, philanthropy, legal affairs, and diversity initiatives. Most recently, as Director of Development, Signature Events at the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, he secured regional and national philanthropic investment while executing performance-based fundraising strategies that expanded donor acquisition and retention.

He previously held multiple leadership roles with the Premier Lacrosse League, culminating as Director of PLL Assists & Legal Associate. In that capacity, he led charitable and community impact initiatives, managed partnership development, advanced diversity and inclusion programming, and negotiated sponsorship and intellectual property agreements. Earlier in his career, he served as Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Program Manager at Lawline and gained legal experience with the National Football League Management Council and the NYC Human Resources Administration.

Mathieu earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law, where he received the Archibald R. Murray Public Service Award. He also holds a Master of Education from the University of Hawaii and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Bates College.

"We are thrilled to welcome Eric to UMass Boston Athletics," said Dr. Jacqueline Schuman, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics and Recreation. "His relationship orientation, ability to identify and match mission focused partnerships and philanthropic opportunities, and commitment to student-athlete success will be instrumental in elevating our program and expanding opportunities for our Beacon community."

"I am incredibly honored to be joining the team at UMass Boston during such an exciting time for the athletics department," said Eric Mathieu. "I'm thrilled to work alongside Dr. Schuman and the rest of the team, as well as the student-athletes, coaches, loyal UMass Boston alumni, and the greater Boston business community to contribute to the program's continued growth and success. Go Beacons!"
