UMass Boston Announces Appointment of Dr. Peter Federman as Faculty Athletic Representative

Boston, MA (Feb. 6, 2025) --- The University of Massachusetts Boston announces the appointment of Dr. Peter Federman, an assistant professor at the McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies, as the new faculty athletic representative (FAR).

Dr. Federman is known to many students, faculty colleagues, and staff across campus for his exemplary teaching, research, and service in the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs.

"The FAR position serves as an important liaison to our Athletic Department and to our student-athletes," said Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Jacqui Schuman. "We are so fortunate to have a leader with the passion that Dr. Federman has for empowering our student-athletes to reach their potential both academically and athletically by bridging these two communities and enhancing the educational experience through sports."

Dr. Federman, a gifted mentor, is dedicated to helping students succeed. He believes that a strong athletics and recreation department, with support from the university's academic departments and a focus on promoting both scholarly and athletic excellence, can improve morale, collaboration, and engagement at UMass Boston and among the universities within the Little East Conference.

"I am excited to take on this important role and work with our students, staff, and faculty across the university to further enhance and create new connections. I look forward to connecting students to new academic opportunities and working with faculty to increase awareness of and support for our student-athletes. Go Beacons," Dr. Federman said.

Dr. Federman graduated from Tufts University and earned his MPA from John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York, as well as his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas, where he was the inaugural Chester A. Newland Fellow. Before joining the UMass Boston faculty, he served as an assistant professor at the Paul H. O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University from 2019 to 2023. Dr. Federman's research examines the politics of policymakers and the influence of politics on administrative actions and behavior. By using innovative mixed-methodological approaches, he aims to understand politicians, public administrators, and policymakers within the political, historical, and cultural contexts in which they operate. His published work focuses on policing, social equity, public health, national defense, and human resources.

Dr. Federman's experience in NCAA Division I and Division III settings will serve him well in this role. Athletics are an integral part of the UMass Boston experience, empowering our Beacon student-athletes and preparing them for leadership and citizenship.
