BOSTON, Mass. – Director of Athletics and Recreation Jacqueline Schuman has announced the appointment of Matthew Hyde as UMass Boston's interim head strength and conditioning coach, effective Monday, October 4, 2021.
Hyde, who comes to the harbor campus from Trinity College (CT), will be responsible for working with every Beacons program. He will be tasked with creating and implementing sport specific training programs and developing a strength and conditioning internship program. The strength and conditioning program has become a vital part of the success of the Beacons programs, which have won two NCAA National Championship, six NCAA Super Regional and Regional championships, and over 30 Little East Conference and New England Hockey conference titles since the creation of the position.
"Matt comes to us as a dedicated professional who is well-rounded in his knowledge and aptitude across the field of sport performance. He continues to educate himself on the most cutting-edge training in this field and we are thrilled to have his talent to lead our 18 teams."
While at Trinity College, Hyde designed and implemented the training protocols for multiple teams including women's basketball, men's lacrosse, and men's and women's tennis. Throughout the pandemic, Hyde has successfully created programs, including extensive curriculum for a virtual internship program, while working with student-athletes coach both in person and virtually.
Prior to his arrival in Hartford, Hyde served as the intern at Division 1 Rutgers University, where he worked with the Olympic Sport teams. No stranger to the Little East Conference, Hyde served as the graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Castleton University. As the graduate assistant, he developed programs for men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey, and wrestling programs. He also worked with the football program and coordinated schedules for lifting and conditioning.
During his young career, Hyde has also worked at the University at Buffalo, Colorado State University, and Get Fast Inc.
A 2014 graduate of Iowa State University, where he earned his bachelor's in Kinesiology and Health – Health and Fitness Management. He graduated Cum Laude from Iowa State. He earned his master's in Athletic Leadership from Castleton in 2018.
Hyde currently holds multiple certifications.
