Men's Tennis Sweeps Castleton To Earn Fourth-Straight Win

BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston men's tennis won all 24 games in doubles play, to spark a 9-0 rout of Castleton University on Saturday in Little East Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In their first-ever meeting with the conference's newest member, the Beacons won every games in doubles and did not drop a set in singles to earn their fourth-straight win. 

Miguel Beltran (Ashland, Mass.), Ray Platteel (Holbrook, Mass.) and Onkgopotse Mokoka (Pretoria, South Africa) all went 2-0 in the victory. 

The Beacons were all over the Spartans from start-to-finish.

Roy Platteel (Holbrook, Mass.) and Ray Platteel opened the match with an 8-0 sweep at third doubles. 

Beltran and Mokoka tacked on an 8-0 win over their own at second doubles and Nandish Shah (Ahmedabad, India) and Alexander Comerchero (Brookline, Mass.) closed out the sweep with a first-doubles victory. 

Senior Tin Tran (Saigon, Vietnam) added the Beacons fourth win by blanking of the day, as he earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth singles. 

Junior Sal Albano (Haverhill, Mass.) clinched the match victory at sixth singles, when the junior claimed a 6-4, 6-0 win at sixth singles. 

Sophomore Leandro Mang (Buenos Aires, Argentina) kept the momentum rolling with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fourth singles. 

Ray Platteel tacked on his second win of the day at second singles, with a 6-2, 6-2 win. 

Beltran pushed the Beacons lead to 8-0 overall, when he earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Jared Wheeler at first singles. 

In the closest match of the day, Mokoka defeated Levi Williams 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) at third singles. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Albano was making his season debut and moved to 2-0 for his collegiate career in singles play. 
  • Tran has won two of his past three singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. 
  • Mokokoa has won a team-high, four-straight singles matches. He has won a team-best five total singles matches (5-1) this year. 
  • Ray and Roy Platteel are a perfect 4-0 this year as a doubles pairing, while Comerchero and Shah combined for their fourth-straight win at fourth singles. 
  • The Beacons have now won their last four matches by a 33-3 margin. 

WHO'S NEXT 

UMass Boston will stay in Vermont overnight and take on Division II Saint Michael's College on Sunday at Noon.
