Johnson & Wales Downs Women's Soccer On Opening Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Johnson & Wales University struck for four goals in a 14-minute span of the first half, to earn a 6-1 win over UMass Boston women's soccer on Opening Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore goalie Jessie Tenaglia (Braintree, Mass.) kept the Beacons in the game all night long by stopping 13 shots in her second collegiate start. She posted seven saves in the first half, before tacking on six more in the second stanza.

Senior forward Kerri Alexander (Carver, Mass.) accounted for the Beacons' lone goal in the loss. She took a cross from fellow senior Jessi Beverlin (Eagle River, Alaska) and tapped it home at 37:04.

That goal snapped the Wildcats' run of four-straight goals in the first half.

Freshman Olivia Cairrao opened the scoring at 23:04 and pushed the lead to 2-0 at 28:14. After Cat Nolan made it 3-0 at 30:23, Cairrao completed her hat trick at 33:59.

Junior Deja Hursey added a second-half brace with two goals in a 13-minute span.

Johnson & Wales sophomore goalie Colleen Lynch made two saves on three shots to earn the victory.

For the game, Johnson & Wales University owned a 37-5 edge in shots and a 19-3 advantage in shots on goals.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Ten players made their Beacons' debut in the loss, with nine players earning their collegiate debut. Freshmen Eryn Kelly (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kayleigh LaFreniere (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Bilyak (Willington, Conn.) all earned spots in the starting lineup in their collegiate debuts.
  • Alexander and Beverlin led the Beacons with two shots apiece.
  • UMass Boston fell to 2-3-1 all-time against Johnson & Wales University.

UMass Boston will continue their season-opening road trip on Wednesday night, when they travel to Wesleyan University (Conn.) for a 7:30 p.m. start.
