HOW IT HAPPENED
After Castleton scored one goal in each of the first two periods, sophomore Drew Gannon (Plano, Texas) and Nolan Redler (Winchester, Mass.) scored almost 10 minutes apart in the third to earn the road tie.
Gannon scored at 3:38 of the third off passes from linemates Dakota Keene (Poland, Maine) and Daniel Nachbaur (Richland, Wash.).
Redler tied the score at 2-2 with a power-play tally at 12:21. The goal marked his fourth of the weekend and gave him seven points in two games, while stretching his point streak to 10-straight. His linemates Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) and Ryan Cusin (Detroit, Mich.) both added assists on the play.
In net, MacBurnie made 12 of his 27 saves in the third and overtime to help the Beacons achieve a 3-point weekend.
Ryan O'Toole and Mark Shroyer each found the back of the net for the hosts, who earned a pair of ties against UMass Boston and Babson College this weekend.
Ryan Mulder came up huge for the Spartans, as he stopped 32 shots, including making six saves in the extra session.
O'Toole gave the visitors the lead just 6:13 into the contest with his third goal of the season. UMass Boston outshot Castleton 8-6 the rest of the period, but couldn't solve Mulder.
UMass Boston opened the second period on the man-advantage, but found themselves down two goals just 31 seconds into the period. Mark Shroyer was able to beat MacBurnie for a short-handed tally, with Patrick Thornton and Trevor Hanna being credited with assists.
The Beacons finally snuck one past Mulder on their 22nd shot of the game. Gannon fired one past Mulder at 3:38 of the third, with the shot being the first Beacons shot on net of the period.
UMass Boston evened the game up midway through their third power play of the game. Larkin and Cusin directed the puck down low to Redler, who's shot deflected off Mulder's pads and in for a 2-2 tie.
Both teams had late power play chances in the final five minutes of regulation, but neither could find the go-ahead goal.
UMass Boston had several great chances late in overtime, but Mulder stood tall for a 2-2 tie.
