Babson Slips Past Women's Soccer Despite Huge Day From Fugiel

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Despite a season-high 16 saves from sophomore goalie Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.), UMass Boston couldn't overcome host Babson College in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

THE BASICS

Babson College 2, UMass Boston 0

(UMass Boston 1-5-0)

(Babson 2-1-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Jennifer Narlee and sophomore Kathryn Clark both found the back of the net for the Beavers, who extended their home unbeaten streak to 12 games.

Fugiel kept the Beacons in the game thanks to eight saves in both halves. Her 16 saves were the second-most of her career, behind only a 17-save performance against Western Connecticut State University in last year's Little East Conference Semifinals.

The Green and White pinned UMass Boston in its defensive half throughout the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to score despite a 16-1 edge in shots. Fugiel made eight first-half saves, including a diving stop at the left post to deny an attempt by Clark in the 25th minute.

The Beavers finally broke through less than two minutes after the break on Clark's first goal of the season. Endow carried the ball down the right flank and cut inside along the end line before sending a low cross into the box for Clark, who touched it out of Fugiel's grasp and inside the near post at the 46:47 mark.

Babson extended its advantage in the 67th minute when Narlee headed home a corner kick by Beggan from the center of the box to for her fourth career goal to make it 2-0.

Sophomores Maddison Gierschick  and Elizabeth Mycock each played 45 minutes and were not forced to make a save while recording their second clean sheet of the year for the Green and White.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Beavers finished with an 18-0 edge in shots on goal and attempted all nine of the game's corner kicks.
  • Babson improved to 2-0-1 all-time against the Beacons, with all three games coming in the past three years.
  • Sophomore Jaclyn O'Grady (Somers, Conn.) recorded the lone shot of the day for the Beacons.
