HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Pilgrims were able to get back-to-back goals to close out the third period, the Beacons went into the overtime period knowing a win would put them in firm control of first place in the conference standings. The Beacons did not waste long to extend their lead in the NEHC as Bishop tallied the game-winner off of a Zach Lindsay (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) assist.
The goal capped off the hat trick for Bishop, who also picked-up an assist in the victory to seal a career-best four points for the junior defenseman.
It was not until the second period of Saturday's conference game that the Beacons were able to seize control of the contest. The first period got off to a very rough start for UMass as the Pilgrims, fresh off of a tie with Babson College, scored back-to-back goals in the first nine minutes. They broke the scoreless draw at 6:04 of the period, and then added to their lead at 9:21, with both goals coming from Kyle Manlow.
Just over a minute after Manlow's second goal, Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got the Beacons on the board, as he netted his ninth goal of the year off of a Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) assist, his team-leading 17th. The score would remain 2-1 in favor of NEC, until the 19:18 mark when Bishop netted his first goal of the day to even the score at 2-2 going into the first intermission. UMass led the first period offensively as they outshot NEC 16-5.
In the second the Bishop gave UMB their first lead of the afternoon just over seven minutes into the frame. Colin Lark (Waterford, Mich.) would then make it a two-score game at 11:41, with Bishop assisting on the play.
NEC would respond with one goal in the period to keep the Beacons lose, as both teams went into the locker room for the final time, with UMB out in front 4-3.
The third period was a wild one, as UMass looked to be in total control as DeAugustine scored just one minute and nine seconds into the final period to make it 5-3. The Beacons would keep the Pilgrims off the scoreboard until the 12:56 mark when NEC made it a one goal game. They would then tie the score at 14:17 forcing the overtime period.
UMass would lead the contest in total shots 41-29, and were 2-for-3 on the power play. Senior netminder Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) combined for 24 stops to improve to 5-0-0 on the season.
