HOW IT HAPPENED
Five players scored and six others added assists, led by two each from Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) and Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.), to help the Beacons earn the season-sweep of the Spartans.
UMass Boston scored twice in the first, twice in the second and added the first goal of the third to earn their second-straight 5-1 win over Castleton, in which they went ahead 5-0.
In net, senior goalie Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) just missed out on his first shutout of the season, as he stopped the first 29 shots he faced, before giving up goal with just 1:07 left. He finished with 30 saves on 31 shots in the win.
Castleton's Fabio Klay broke up the shutout for the Spartans, who were swept over the weekend, after coming in riding a three-game winning streak. Will Laking and Caleb Fizer picked up assists on the play.
Sophomore goalie Ryan Mulder stopped 28 of 33 shots to fall to 3-8-0 on the year.
A night after getting off to an extremely sluggish start, UMass Boston came out firing out of the gate and broke through at 12:37. Larkin fed Lemire who's initial shot was stopped by Mulder, but it fell right to Daley who easily scored for a 1-0 advantage.
The Beacons added a second tally at 18:19 off another rebound. Freshman David MacGregor (Asuza, Calif.) sent a soft shot off of Mulder that caromed right to senior Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) and Miller collected the puck, before roofing a shot for a 2-0 lead.
The Beacons kept the momentum going at 7:18 when they connected for a four-on-four tally. Lemire sent a pass ahead to Larkin and Larkin's centering feed evaded the defense, leaving junior Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) all kinds of space, to easily beat Mulder for a 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Drew Gannon (Plano, Texas) made it 4-0 at 13:59, when
Zach Lindsay (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) fed Gannon a pass on a 2-on-1 and Gannon rifled home a shot for his third collegiate tally.
UMass Boston's second line connected for their fifth and final tally, as seniors Derek Colucci (North Scituate, R.I.) and Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked apart the defense, before freshman Garrison Sanipass (Northbrook, Ill.) tapped home for a 5-0 lead at 11:32 of the third.
Klay ended Faust's shutout bid with 1:07 to play, when he beat Faust five-hole off a wide shot that caromed off the boards right to him.
