HOW IT HAPPENED
UMass Boston scored twice in the opening 6:44 and never trailed, to push their lead in the New England Hockey Conference back to three points. After a scoreless third period, Larkin broke through with a power-play goal on a five-minute major, to help the Beacons earn their first win against the Beavers at the Babson Skating Center since January 25, 2013.
Larkin continued his hot run against Babson All-American goalie Jamie Murray, as he tallied his second career two-goal game against the Beavers. For his career, Larkin has now recorded six goals and two assists in five games against Babson.
Senior Alex Demchuk Calgary, Alberta) recorded his first collegiate game-winner and third total goal of his career in the win. Junior captain Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) put the icing on the cake, as he scored an empty-net goal, for his first goal since suffering a bad injury on November 29.
In net, senior Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) capped off the best weekend of his collegiate career with another huge performance. The senior stopped 35 of 36 shots, including all 29 he faced over the final two periods.
Babson's Matt Brazel recorded the lone goal for the Beavers, who have now dropped three of their past five games.
Murray had another strong game, as the senior goalie stopped 32 of 35 shots in the loss.
It took UMass Boston just 1:31 to open the scoring. Freshman Gabe Chuckran (Media, Pa.) sent a soft shot from the point that Larkin deflected past Murray from just out in front for a 1-0 lead. Senior Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) was credited with the second assist, to extend his point streak to 14 games.
The Beacons added a second tally at 6:44, off another chance from in close. Demchuk's initial shot was stopped by Murray, but the senior scooped it past Murray on the rebound for a 2-0 edge.
Babson got one back at 12:45, when the teams' third line combined for a nifty goal. Max Franklin and Bill Seligman opened up the Beacons defense and Brazel fired home from the near side, just underneath a diving Faust.
Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the second period, as Babson outshot UMass Boston 17-10 but had nothing to show for it. The Beacons had a short 5-on-3 early in the period and played up a man for the first 2:28, but couldn't beat Murray. Babson earned a late power-play, but UMass Boston's league-leading PK easily killed it off.
The game totally changed 1:42 into the third, when Babson's Jake Donahue was ejected and assessed a five-minute major for hitting from behind. With five minutes of power-play action at their disposal, UMass Boston grabbed a 3-1 lead at 4:22 on a huge slapshot from Larkin. Senior Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up an assist on the play.
UMass Boston put the game away with 35 seconds left, as Daley potted an empty-netter for a 4-1 win.
