BOSTON, Mass. – In just three short seasons, junior libero Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) has cemented her place in the history books, as she broke the program record for digs in a career in a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Christopher Newport University Friday evening in the Clark Gymnasium on the first day of the Beacons Invite.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Glavan's historic day came as a result of 24 dig showing against the third ranked Captains. The Minnesota native surpassed the program mark of 1,387 in just 75 matches, as she continues to put together one of the most impressive careers in program history. In a combined 265 sets played, Glavan has totaled 1,395 digs and is averaging 5.26 digs per set.
The Beacons came out firing in the opening set as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead, behind huge blocks from Bri Sousa (Swansea, Mass.), Haley Diedrick (Canton, Mich.) and Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass.). Koen, along with Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.), and Sousa also got the offense off to a good start as each played scored a match opening kill. Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.) quickly put the momentum in the Beacons corner, as she nailed an ace to open the match.
Christopher Newport would eventually crawl their way back and pullout a 25-20 decision, with Hannah Miller and Maddie McCann combing for 10 kills respectively. In the second, the Beacons rallied hard and with some huge runs managed to sneak past CNU with a 28-26 victory to tie the match at 1-1.
Unfortunately that rally could not carry over into the third, as the Captains powered past UMass with a 25-21 win, before they clinched their seven victory in the fourth with a dominating 25-16 decision.
Shi went onto lead the Beacons with 14 kills and 11 digs. The freshman hitter also posted a team-high .308 hitting percentage. Baker tallied 19 assists in the loss, while freshman setter Rachel Maslach (Berlin Center, Ohio) picked-up 16 helpers. At the net Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.), Sousa, and Koen each posted three block assists.
BY THE NUMBERS
- With Friday's loss the Beacons drop to 0-3 all-time against Christopher Newport since their first meeting on October 13, 2012.
- Shi has now recorded 10 or more kills in her last three matches, and has now posted three double-doubles.
- With her 24 digs, Glavan now stands as the all-time leader at UMass Boston breaking the original record of 1,387 set by Corrine Porter. (2010-13).
- Christopher Newport represented the fourth opponent in the Beacons first six games that was ranked on the AVCA Preseason Poll.
