Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine—Seven different skaters recorded multi-point games to lead #8/9 UMass Boston men's hockey (19-3-1 14-2-0 ECAC East) to a 7-3 win over the University of New England (8-12-2, 6-8-2 ECAC East) Saturday afternoon at the Alfond Arena.
With the victory, the Beacons tied the 2012-2013 team for the second-most overall wins in program history with 19, and the 1990-91 team for the second-most conference wins in a single season (14).
Junior Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) potted a pair of goals to help UMass Boston improve to 15-0-1 all-time against the Nor'Easters.
Fellow juniors Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) and Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) each finished with a team-high three points (one goal and two assists) to help the Beacons to their fifth-straight win and ninth in their past 10 games.
Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.), Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) also found the back of the net for the Beacons.
All four lines recorded at least one goal in the victory, with Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.), Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) and Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) joining MacIntyre and Lemire with two assists apiece.
While they were held off the scoreboard, defenseman John Houston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Brett Mason (Rowley, Mass.) registered a team-best +6 and +5 +/- rating respectively.
In net, Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) stayed unbeaten, as he stopped 38 of 41 shots to move to 10-0-1. In two games on the weekend, Faust made 61 stops on 64 shots to help the Beacons earn their fifth and sixth season-sweeps of the year.
Nick Wirth led the Nor'Easters with a goal and an assist, while senior Jared Melman and sophomore Blaise Healey also scored.
Senior netminder Craig Ryan made the first start of his senior campaign and made 34 saves. Prior to the contest, the Nor'Easters honored their nine seniors-who comprised the third four-year class in program history.
UMass Boston finished 0-for-3 on the man-advantage, while the Nor'Easters ended the day 1-for-5. The two teams combined for 82 total shots on goal, with both teams recording 41.
Milam opened the scoring at 4:26 of the first period, when he beat Ryan off of a tremendous feed from Larkin.
The University of New England answered back at 6:35 of the period, when Wirth scored off a pass from Ryan Quinn at 6:35.
Twenty seconds later, Miller gave the Beacons the lead for good (2-1). McStravick and Daley each picked up assists on the play.
UMass Boston would extend their lead to 3-1 in the second period, when DeAugustine netted the lone goal of the stanza. The junior forward rushed hard at the net and poked the puck loose from Ryan's grasp, before slipping it home at 8:15. Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) and Larkin were credited with assists.
Miller scored the eventual game-winning goal at 3:19 of the third, when he rifled home a shot just under the bar on the glove side to make it 4-1.
The Beacons pushed their lead out to 5-1 at 5:45 of the period, when Lemire blasted home his third goal in the past three games. MacIntyre and Buco each picked up assists on the tally.
Healey would cut the deficit back to three 33 seconds later, when he slipped in a tough-angled shot past Faust to cut the deficit to 5-2.
MacIntyre scored the fourth goal in less than five minutes at 8:13 of the period, after some terrific give-and-go play between the junior and Buco. The two went back-and-forth, before MacIntyre deked out Ryan, only to easily slip in a back-hand shot, with Lemire picking up the second assist.
The Nor'Easters capped off the crazy opening 10 minutes of the third with a power-play tally at 9:55. Melman rifled home a shot off passes from Trevor Fleurent and Zeth Zielinski to cut the deficit to 6-3.
UMass Boston killed off a 6-on-4 penalty to cut out any Nor'Easters comeback chances, and McStravick put the game to rest with 14 seconds left. After a Beacons clear into the Nor'Easters end, the junior raced past two defenders in the neutral zone and easily potted home an empty-netter.
The Beacons will look to claim the second 20-win season in program history on Friday night, when UMass Boston hosts Saint Michael's College at 7 p.m.
