#6/7 Men's Hockey Downs #1 Norwich 4-3 On Senior Day

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass.--#6/7 UMass Boston men's hockey (21-3-1, 16-2-0 ECAC East) scored three third-period goals to knock off #1 Norwich University (21-3-1, 17-1-0 ECAC East) 4-3 Saturday afternoon in front of a packed house on Senior Day.

The Beacons five seniors tied the Class of 1984 for the most wins in a career, as the Class of 2015 picked up their 70th win in 105 collegiate contests (70-25-10).

Junior forward Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 5:06 remaining to cap off a wild comeback. UMass Boston trailed 2-1 and 3-2, before Mike Maciag (Plymouth, Mich.) and MacIntyre scored 32 seconds apart to lift the Beacons to their third win in four seasons at home against the Cadets.

MacIntyre finished with two goals and an assist, while senior linemate Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) added three assists.

Sophomore forward Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) tallied the final goal for the Beacons, as he closed out a four-point weekend (two goals and two assists).

Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) earned his ninth-straight victory, as the junior netminder made 32 stops on 35 shots. He finished off the regular season as one of two goaltenders to not lose a game (12-0-1), joining #9/10 SUNY Plattsburgh's Spencer Finney (8-0-1).

Tyler Piacentini and Bryce Currier each finished with a goal and an assist for the Cadets, who will be the #1 seed in the upcoming ECAC East Tournament.

The Beacons will be the number two seed in the tournament, despite finishing with the exact same regular-season record. Both teams will host an ECAC East Quarterfinal game next Saturday against an opponent and with a time to be determined.

Kevin Salvucci added the final goal for Norwich who saw their seven-game winning streak come to a close.

In net, sophomore Ty Reichenbach was handed his first loss of the season, after giving up four goals on 31 shots. Reichenbach came in to the game tied with Faust atop all Division III goaltenders with their identical 11-0-1 records. With the loss, the nation's leader in goals against average also saw his mark rise by .18 goals per game.

UMass Boston took a 1-0 lead 8:21 into the game, when a pair of seniors created the first great chance for either team. Buco came into the zone and fed an onrushing John Houston (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for a huge slapshot that tipped off of MacIntyre's stick in front of Reicenbach and found its way home.

Piacentini evened the game at 1-1 at 14:02 off of a difficult dump in from Currier. Currier rifled a shot from the neutral-zone that took a tough hop that Faust was able to stop but unable to hang on to the rebound. From there, Piacentini grabbed the rebound and sent a shot just under to bar for the Cadets' first goal of the day.

Norwich took their first of two leads on the day in the second period, when Currier scored on the power-play. After a controversial penalty went against the Beacons, Currier blasted a shot from the point through traffic that found it's way just under the bar.

The Beacons answered just 2:13 into the third period off of a mad scramble in front of the Cadets net.

Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) started the odd-man rush with a terrific break-up at center ice and a no-look back-hand pass over to Buco. Buco skated in with MacIntyre to his right and took a difficult shot that Reichenbach just managed to get a toe-save on. Buco tapped the rebound over to Bishop who was trailing the play and Bishop's initial shot was saved, but MacIntyre fed it back to Bishop, and the defenseman slipped it between a sprawled out Reichenbach and a defender for a 2-2 tie.

The tie would only last for six minutes though, as Salvucci beat Faust at 8:17 to give the Cadets a 3-2 lead. Salvucci and William Pelletier perfectly executed a give-and-go, with Salvucci blasting his shot through Faust's five-hole.

With under six minutes to go and their perfect 8-0-0 conference home record on the line, UMass Boston took the lead behind two goals in 32 seconds.

The Beacons scored the first goal at 14:22 when Maciag scored his first goal of the season and just the second of his career. Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) cycled the puck up top for Dan Cornell (Abington, Mass.) who sent it across for Maciag. The sophomore defenseman sent a blast through traffic that slipped inside the near post for a 3-3 tie.

After Reichenbach was forced to sit on a Brett Mason (Rowley, Mass.) rebound and give up an offensive-zone face-off, the Beacons took the lead at 14:54. Buco won the face-off over to MacIntyre who sent a shot just under the bar for a 4-3 lead.

The Cadets outshot the Beacons 35-31 for the game, although the Beacons outshot Norwich 15-11 during their three-goal third period. Norwich finished 1-for-3 on the man-advantage, while UMass Boston went 0-for-1.
