Box Score
BOSTON, Mass.--#11/12 UMass Boston men's hockey (14-2-1, 9-1-0 ECAC East) used three third-period goals to earn the season-sweep of New England College (5-9-1, 4-5-1 ECAC East) with a 4-1 victory Saturday afternoon at the Beacons Ice Arena.
Sophomore Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.), and juniors Mike Miller (Wrentham, Mass.) and Kit Sitterley (Mooresville, N.C.) all scored within a 10-minute span of the third period to help the Beacons extend their winning streak to four.
After falling behind in each of their first six games of 2015, UMass Boston head coach Peter Belisle described his team's effort as "Our most complete game of the season."
Senior Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) added the Beacons first goal of the night, in what can only be described as one of the top goals of the season.
In net, Zach Andrews (Coral Springs, Fla.) stopped 25 of 26 shots to improve to 9-2 on the season and to break out of a mini funk. The junior who went 7-0-0 to start the season, had allowed three or more goals in his past three games.
New England College junior Kyle Manlow recorded the lone tally for the Pilgrims who saw their four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2) snapped at the hands of the Beacons. One night after tying #6 Babson College 3-3, the Pilgrims struggled to keep up with the Beacons' high-octane offense during the two teams sixth period of play in less than 24 hours.
Senior netminder Sebastien Andersson fell to 0-2 on the year agains the Beacons, after handing UMass Boston two of their six losses a year ago. The Swedish All-Conference goalie made 37 stops, to fall to 4-5-2 on the season.
UMass Boston dominated the stat line for a second-straight night, as they outshot the Pilgrims 41-26 and won 46 of the 73 face-offs. While they failed to score on their two power-play opportunities, the Beacons penalty kill played a huge part in the win, as they killed off all four New England College chances, including a 5-on-3 for 1:13 in the third period.
Buco started the scoring at 15:47 of the third period when he hooked up with senior defenseman Dan Cornell (Abington, Mass.) for one of the goals of the year. The senior defenseman controlled the puck just past his own goal line and sent a breakout pass off the boards and past two Pilgrims, to Buco who was waiting at the blue line. With a defenseman and a goalie to beat, Buco came in from the right side and deked out the defenseman, before dangling the puck and sending a back-hand shot over Andersson's right shoulder and off the underside of the bar.
Manlow answered back in the second period for the Pilgrims, when he took a pass from John Quinlan and gained some space, before roofing home a shot over Andrews' shoulder.
After failing to beat Andersson for close to 30 minutes, the Beacons struck for three goals in the third period over a 9:05 span.
Bishop opened the scoring after some strong fore-checking from the Beacons' second-line of
Mike Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.),
Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) and
Nathan Milam (Westland, Mich.) pinned the Pilgrims in their own zone. Kuhn sent a cross-ice pass to Larkin and Larkin knocked it down before feeding Bishop at the blue line. The sophomore defenseman found a lane and skated in, before shooting a blistering shot over Andersson's shoulder on the near side for a 2-1 lead at 7:06 of the period.
UMass Boston added a huge insurance goal at 12:21 when the Beacons' fourth-line came through. Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) held off a defender on a 2-on-2 and sent it across for Miller, who matched Buco and Bishop with a shot just under the bar of his own, to make it 3-1.
Andersson made a brilliant play moments later, when he robbed Kuhn with a glove save on a back-hand shot from point-blank range, but UMass Boston would keep pushing.
The Beacons capped off the scoring at 16:11, when Josh Haverstrom's (Coral Springs, Fla.) shot was knocked down by Andersson, but Sitterley gobbled up the rebound and tapped it home for a 4-1 edge. Junior forward Jeremy Finger (Orlando, Fla.) also was credited with an assist on the play.
UMass Boston will be back in action Friday night at #6 Babson College at 7 p.m. for a key home-and-home weekend series in ECAC East Conference play.
