BOSTON, Mass.—Rachel Ledbetter made 10 saves, including a stop on an overtime penalty kick, to help Salem State University (4-2-2) earn a 1-1 double overtime tie Wednesday afternoon against UMass Boston Women's Soccer (4-2-3) at the Clark Athletic Center Field.
Despite earning a 22-11 advantage in shots and a 14-6 edge in shots on goal, the Beacons failed to extend their winning streak to four.
Freshman Marina Kelly (Whitman,Mass.) gave the Beacons a momentary lead in the first half when she netted a shot from distance for her first home goal as a Beacon. Senior Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Nicole McMinamin (Acworth, Ga.) picked up assists on the play.
Cecelia Cresta Devine added to her team-leading total with her fourth goal of the season just before halftime, to finish off the scoring.
Ledbetter finished with her second-most saves of the season with 10, while her backs bailed her out with three team saves, to help Salem State avoid just their second loss of the season.
In net, Dani Perkins (Murrieta, Calif.) stopped five of six shots for the Beacons.
UMass Boston had several chances to put the Vikings away within the first 15 minutes, but couldn't solve Ledbetter who was forced to make two saves in the opening four minutes.
Kelly gave the Beacons a 1-0 lead at 35:37 off of some strong play from McMinamin and Ledin. McMinamin brought the ball up the left side of the field and sent a strong pass to Ledin, who crossed it to Kelly, before the freshman midfielder rocketed a shot home for her fourth goal.
Salem State responded just over five minutes later, when Cresta Devine turned around at the top of the box and sent a high shot-that bounced off of Perkins' hand and into the net for a 1-1 tie.
Both teams would create great chances to go ahead over the final 65 minutes, but the two goalies each made strong saves.
Kara Digiacomo hit the crossbar on a shot from distance in the 89th minute, while Ledbetter robbed Ledin from the penalty spot in the 99th minute, to keep the score tied.
Salem State's Kelly Birchmore managed the only shot in double overtime but Perkins saved it, as the two teams played to a tie in their first-ever meeting.
UMass Boston will host Little East foe Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday at 1 p.m.
