PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 1, 2025) – Sophomore libero Mary Matthews (Wilsonville, Ore.) has been named the first Little East Conference (LEC) Defensive Player of the Week of the 2025 season following her standout performance at the Garnet Invitational this past weekend.

Matthews was a defensive anchor for the Beacons, recording 54 digs with just two errors across three matches and 11 sets. She posted a perfect 100% reception percentage in Friday's opener against Cortland, tallying 19 digs with no errors, and finished just two digs shy of her career high with 30 against Swarthmore on Saturday.

The honor marks the third LEC weekly award of Matthews' career, after earning two Defensive Player of the Week selections as a rookie in 2024.

Matthews and the UMass Boston volleyball team return to action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. when they travel to Waltham, Mass., to take on Brandeis University.
