Beacons Face Off with Wolves in LEC Championship Showdown

Boston, MA (May 2, 2025) — After an 11-9 victory over Plymouth State in the Little East Conference (LEC) Semifinals, the UMass Boston men's lacrosse team heads to Danbury, Connecticut to take on Western Connecticut State in the LEC Championship. Faceoff is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. 


How We Got Here 

The Beacons enter the title game riding a three-game winning streak and boast a 14-4 overall record. Their only conference loss this season came at the hands of Western Connecticut. 

The Wolves, the top seed in the LEC, earned their spot in the championship with a dominant 17-7 win over Keene State. They come in with a 12-6 overall record and are currently on a nine-game winning streak. 


History 

UMass Boston and WestConn met earlier this season on April 10, when the Wolves handed the Beacons their largest loss of the year. In that game, Julian Duque tallied a game-high six goals. 

Despite the setback, the Beacons hold a 6-4 edge in the last 10 meetings. Their most recent win in the series came in 2022 (23-14 at home), while their last road win in Danbury was in 2019 (11-7). 


Beacons to Watch 

  • Matt Hutchings (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) leads UMass Boston in goals (48), points (64), and is tied with Cole Allan (Falmouth, ME.) for the team lead in assists (16). 

  • Seth Libby (Pomfret, CT.) ranks second in points (43) and leads the Beacons with five game-winning goals. 

  • Patrick Carey (North Andover, Mass.) anchors the defense, leading the team with 78 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers. His 2.17 caused turnovers per game ranks second in the LEC. 

  • The Beacons lead the conference in: 

  • Ground balls per game (44.39) 

  • Caused turnovers per game (13.39) 

  • Shots per game (52.67) 

  • Shots on goal per game (32.56) 
    They rank second in points (23.67), assists (8.61), and goals per game (15.06). 


Wolves to Watch 

  • Jon Russack-Baker leads the LEC with 10.78 ground balls per game. 

  • Jake Kelly tops the conference in goals-against average, allowing just 7.73 goals per game and only 85 goals through 13 appearances. 

  • Western Connecticut ranks just behind UMass Boston in key offensive categories: 

  • Goals per game: 14.21 

  • Assists per game: 8.00 

  • Points per game: 22.21
