Baseball to Open 2025 LEC Season Against Spartans on Saturday

BOSTON, MA (March 21, 2025) – Following their 2024 Regular Season Championship run, the UMass Boston baseball team (8-4) will begin their quest for another regular-season title as they open the 2025 Little East Conference Regular Season with a doubleheader against the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans (3-11) at Monan Park on Saturday, March 21. Game one is scheduled for noon, followed by game two at approximately 3:00 p.m.

The Beacons return to Monan Park with an 8-4 record as they begin the LEC Regular Season. Of their eight wins to date, the Beacons have scored double-digit totals in five wins, including a season-high 17 runs against three opponents (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Salem State, and New England College).

Castleton is 3-11 to start the season, with wins over Principia College (15-4 F/7), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) (15-9 F/10), and Emerson College (5-4 F/10). After losing 10 consecutive games, the Spartans have won their last two consecutive games against RPI and Emerson.

By the Numbers:

UMass Boston:

  • Offensively, the Beacons are led by sophomore Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.), Justin Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.), and Bostyn Burris (Highland Village, Tex.) in RBIs. Miles leads the team with 12 RBIs this season, four of which came during the Spring Break road trip.
  • Richard Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) leads the Beacons in batting average (.424) followed by Mike Meagher (Marston's Mills, Mass.) with a .385 average, and Gouveia with a .356. Gouveia, Williams, and Meagher lead the team in total hits, with Gouveia tallying 16, followed by Meagher with 15, and Williams with 14.
  • Of Meagher's 15 hits this season, six were extra-base hits, including five doubles and one triple.
  • On the base paths, Gouveia is tied with Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) for the most stolen bases with seven each. Gouveia and Jimenez are both a perfect 7-7 in steal attempts.
  • Brandon Gaer (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Meagher lead all Beacons in on-base percentage. Gaer leads with a .500 OBP, followed by Meagher with .489.

VTSU Castleton:

  • The Spartans have totaled 50 RBIs compared to their opponents' 89. They are led by Turner Clews, Jackson Cardozo, and Tyler McLain. Clews leads the team with eight RBIs, followed by Cardozo and McLain with seven each.
  • Cardozo has a team-high 17 hits this season, including three doubles and one triple. He also leads the team in runs scored with 10 in 2025. Cardozo boasts a team-high .508 OBP and a .362 batting average.
  • Tyler Dubreuil leads all Spartan baserunners with six stolen bases in eight attempts.
