Box Score CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 14, 2024) – The UMass Boston men's soccer team is back in the win column following their 3-1 win over the Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the road from Roberts Field.
The Basics
- Final Score: MIT 1 - 3 UMass Boston
- UMass Boston: 2-1-2
- MIT: 4-2
How it Happened
- The Beacons opened scoring off a corner kick with ten minutes remaining in the first half. The Beacons' senior back Diego Gisholt (Tijuana, Mexico.) laced in a cross to find a mass of white and black jerseys. The Engineers' keeper, Hernando Ardila, punched out the rebound, but UMass Boston's first-year forward Eduardo Chirico (Minas Gerais, Brazil) was in the right place at the right time. He took the first-time volley with power and placed it into the left side netting to open the scoring just before the first half's conclusion.
- Following a foul by the Engineers' defense deep in the MIT half, the Beacons seized the moment of chaos and confusion caused by the hastiness of the Beacon's offense. Unbeknownst to the MIT defense, Gisholt noticed the game clock still expiring with under 30 seconds remaining in the half. Once he lined up with his hand raised and was given the okay by the referee, Gisholt let one rip with nearly the entire MIT defense out of position. The shock start surprised Ardila and the Engineers to add a second onto the scoreboard with time expiring in the first half.
- At the start of the second, the Engineers took one back on the scoreboard following a perfectly placed through ball to first-year midfielder Shikar Motupally, whose first-touch volley was placed just over the outstretched hands of the Beacons' graduate keeper Andy Ramirez (Waltham, Mass.). and dipped under the crossbar into the left side netting for MIT's first and only of the contest.
- With time expiring in the game, MIT knocked on the door several times, but a through ball found the Beacons junior midfielder Elijah Elliot (Hope Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago.) on the left wing, who turned and slotted a pass to senior forward Josh DeAlmeida (Revere, Mass.) who rifled a right foot curler that dipped up and over the Engineers' keeper from about 20 yards out to put the icing on the cake to the Beacs 3-1 finish to jump back into the winning column.
By the Numbers
- UMass Boston held the offensive edge in this matchup, outshooting MIT 15-8, with eight of the Beacons' shots testing Ardila. MIT created more opportunities through late scrambles of desperation as time expired, producing seven corner kicks compared to the Beacons' six.
- Chirico and Gisholt had the hot foot tonight, leading the way for the Beacons' offense with three shots on goal each, with both forwards producing goals in their efforts.
- Ramirez records two saves against three shots faced to improve his season record to 1-0-1.
