BOSTON, Mass. (Sept. 11, 2026) – A late goal by Wittenberg in the 86
th minute proved decisive as the UMass Boston Beacons men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to the Tigers on Friday afternoon at the Boston College High JV Field.
Despite controlling the run of play for a majority of the second half and holding a sizable advantage in shots, the Beacons saw their three-match winning streak snapped.
UMass Boston is now 3-1 on the year, while Wittenberg is 3-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Fifth year goalie
JJ Devine (Halifax, Mass.) notched a pair of saves in the first 20 plus minutes of play that kept things scoreless for the time being as the two sides battled for an early advantage. The Beacons' best chance of the first half came in the 38
th minute as
Cam Ramos (Goiania, Brazil) saw his shot from close range denied with a diving save from Wittenberg's Aidan Rice.
The Tigers struck first in the final second of the first half as a shot from Collin LaVeck following a corner kick bounced off the post and in for a 1-0 lead at halftime.
As they have all season long, head coach
Jake Beverlin's team found an equalizer in the second half when
Ryan Lima (Minas Gerais, Brazil) finished off a scoring opportunity following quick touches from Ramos and
Raphael Alves (Framingham, Mass.) in the 60
th minute.
First year
Gabriel Jordao (Bellingham, Mass.) had his chance from outside the box deflected over the crossbar by Rice in the 64
th minute and
John Arruda (Espirito Santo, Brazil) added a shot on target in the 73
rd minute, but things remained deadlocked at one. The pressure continued to mount and UMass Boston tallied four more shots between the 77
th and 81
st minutes.
Against the run of play in the 86
th minute, the Tigers' Gabriel Rahm delivered a ball over the top to Aidan Donohue who headed it home to give the visitors a 2-1 edge that proved to be the difference in the contest.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
The Beacons held an 18-9 shot advantage on the afternoon led by four from Jordao, while the duo of Arruda and Ramos added three apiece. Jordao logged 42 minutes of action off the bench and provided a spark with several dangerous runs into the attacking areas.
Devine registered two saves for UMass Boston and Rice made six for Wittenberg with both keepers playing all 90 minutes.
