BOSTON, MA (February 3, 2024)—The UMass Boston women's track and field program continued to trend upwards on an unforgettable season for the Beacons at the oval office on Saturday, February 3 from Medford, MA as the Beacons shined at the Cupid Challenge at Tufts University.
SPRINTS:
Sophomore sprinter
Aryianna Garceau blinded the record books once again by blowing the UMass Boston 60m hurdle record out of the water. Garceau started off in prelims shattering her old record of 9.29 by over two-tenths of a second, for a new UMB indoor hurdles record of 9.07. She followed up her record-breaking dash in finals by dropping a 9.11, good for third place outright. First-year
Hialeah Foster held things down for the Beacons in the 60m dash, as she recorded an 8.46 finish in the short sprints. Junior
Harleen Bassan represented UMass in the 400m dash finishing in 69.93 seconds.
Meanwhile, at the Scarlet and White Invitational from Boston University, junior sprinter
Dorinda Okorji put together a 7.92 finish in the 60m dash, good for 21
st out of 49 competitors.
DISTANCE:
Strapping up for the 800m run was first-year
Amiya Sharp, as she registered a 3:07.49 finish through four laps. The junior tandem duo of Sarah Cambell and
Grace Colon joined forces for the Beacons in the one mile, with Colon crossing first for UMass Boston with a new personal record of 5:47.23 as she took first place in her heat. She was followed by Cambell who finished in 6:17.46.
Sophomore
Jacqueline Earner was also active from Boston University at the Scarlet and White Invitational, as she set a new personal record in the 800m dash with a 2.22.66 finish, good for first place in her heat featuring talent across all the levels in the NCAA.
The Beacs also laced together a 4x800m relay at Tufts, assembled by junior
Elia Velez, along with Colon, Cambell, and Bassan. Together they registered a finish of 10:59.62.
JUMPS:
Foster took to the runway following her performance in the 60m dash, as she registered marks of 4.88m (16' 0.25"), 4.62m, and 4.71m. Her best was good enough for 14
th out of 29 competitors.
THROWS:
Junior
Cayla Jean-Louise doubled in the shot put and the weight throw. In the shot put, she registered a best of 8.55m (28' 0.75"), good for 27
th out of 47 competitors. Sophomore
Abigail Schell supported Jean-Louise in the weight throw, as they both recorded a best throw of 8.58m (28' 1.75").
