UMass Boston Celebrates Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month

Boston, MA (Oct. 7, 2024) --- In celebration and recognition of Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month, UMass Boston Athletics will be highlighting student athletes and staff throughout the month.

In the second installment, Marcelo Cunha, Equipment Manager and Assistant Men's Soccer Coach, shares his story and what it means to him to be Brazilian.

What does Hispanic and Latin American Heritage Month mean to you?

As a Brazilian, it's a month that allows us to celebrate our lively, fun, and rich culture.

How has your heritage shaped who you are today?

We speak Portuguese at home, cook and eat Brazilian food, listen to and attend Brazilian concerts. I would say My Heritage immensely shaped who I am today, feeding off of the warm culture, traditions and values; which has helped me to work in such a diverse and inclusive place as UMass Boston.

What does it mean to you to be a Beacon?

Being a Beacon means being resilient, impactful and adaptable. It feels welcoming to be part of a community that is hard working and inspiring.
