BOSTON, MA (January 27, 2024) – Saturday saw seven top-five finishes for the UMass Boston women's track and field team from the Wesleyan Indoor Invite, headlined by junior sprinter
Dorinda Okorji,
Aryianna Garceau, and
Grace Colon who continue their incredible season with first-place finishes in the 60m dash, the 60m hurdles, and the 3000m respectively.
SPRINTS
Okorji took first out of 36 other competitors, as Okorji and first-year
Hialeah Foster represented the Beacons in the 60m finals. Okorji won the event outright with a 7.92 finish, followed by Foster whose best race came in preliminaries with a personal best 8.41 finish. Sophomore
Aryianna Garceau represented UMass Boston in two events today, taking fourth place overall in the 200m dash with a 27.92 finish, beating out 36 others in a 40-women field. Garceau also continued to cause chaos over the 60m hurdles, washing away the competition with a 9.29 finish to win the event outright by one one-hundredth of a second. Sophomores
Delaney Sartwell and
Abigail Schell also took reps in the 60m hurdle preliminaries with Garceau, as Sartwell registered an 11.82 finish, ahead of Schell who crossed the line in 12.93.
The Beacons also linked together for a 4x400m relay run, as sophomore mid-distance sprinter
Jacqueline Earner, along with junior
Harleen Bassan, Cambell, and Colon got the nod to represent the
Beacs as a team relay. Together, they registered a 5:33.24 finish in their first go at the event this season.
DISTANCE
Junior
Elia Velez took to the 1000m run for the Beacons, finishing in 3:44.7, good for a new personal best in the event. The junior tandem of
Grace Colon and Sarah Cambell competed side-by-side in the 3000m run, with Colon winning the event outright in 11:32.62, closely followed by Cambell, who crossed the finishing mark in 12:33.58.
JUMPS
Foster continued her progression in the high jump, as she cleared 1.47m (4' 11.75") on her first attempt, good for a third-place finish in the event. Okorji finished her day off at the runway, registering a best of 4.86m (15' 11.5") for a third-place finish in the long jump.
THROWS
Two Beacons represented UMass in the thrower's circle. Junior
Cayla Jean-Louise and sophomore
Kelsy Duong each strapped up for the bomb squad in the shot put, with Jean-Louise registering a team-best throw of 8.45m (27' 8.75"), good for a personal best. Duong followed her up with a throw of 7.65m (25' 1.25").
The Beacons keep progressing through this season before their next meeting at the Boston University Valentine's Meet from Boston University on Saturday, February 10 as they look to continue to grow in the oval office before heading outdoors. Results for the BU Valentine's Meet can be found at
