HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind by as many as five runs early (6-1), UMass Boston scored 11-straight runs between the sixth and eighth innings to finish their season-opening homestand 3-1.
Sophomore Ryan Leung (Brookline, Mass.) led the offense by going 3-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. He added a double and crushed his first collegiate home run.
Senior Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) enjoyed a big day of his own. The first baseman went 4-6 with three runs scored, three RBI and finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle.
Junior third baseman Curtis Tirone (Waltham, Mass.) blasted a double and a triple and finished with a run scored and three RBI.
Senior pitcher Joey Rogers (Dighton, Mass.) came out of the pen to earn his second win in as many appearances. The lefty struck out seven and allowed five hits, one walk and three earned runs in 5.2 innings.
Framingham State catcher Nicholas Simonenko paced the visitors with two hits and three RBI. Leadoff hitter Robert Higgins went 3-3 with three runs scored, a walk and an RBI.
Jonathan Cloutier took the loss for the Rams. The sophomore, who was the fourth of six Framingham State pitchers on the day, allowed four runs (one earned) over 1.1 innings.
Framingham State came out swinging and scored four runs in the top of the first and seven runs in the first three frames. In the top of the first, Andrew Caulfield and Kyle Bolger each came through with two-run RBI singles to make it 4-0.
UMass Boston answered back with a single run of their own, as McCormick doubled to score Steve Brookewell (Highstown, N.J.) who walked and stole second.
After Framingham State stretched the lead to 6-1 in the top of the second, UMass Boston answered back with two runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brookwell roped a double down the right-field line to score Nick Palma (Peabody, Mass.) and Leung.
The Rams scored another run in the top of the third, only for Nick Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.) to respond with an RBI double to score Nico Kydes (Stamford, Conn.).
Rogers came on in the top of the fourth and immediately quieted the Rams bats. He retired the first eight batters he faced, including one-two-three innings in the fourth and fifth.
Despite Rogers' excellent pitching, UMass Boston found themselves down 8-4 heading to the bottom of the sixth, when Framingham State recorded back-to-back two out hits in the top of the sixth.
With two on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Tirone skied a deep fly ball to the warning track in right that went just over the outfielder's head and scored McCormick and Cotraro. Palma followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-7.
The Beacons took their first lead of the game in the seventh. Leung and Danny Brown (Hudson, N.H.) worked back-to-back walks and with one out and McCormick laced an RBI single to left to tie the game. With two down and runners at second and third, Cotraro grounded a ball down the third-base line that the Rams threw away to score McCormick and Kydes. Tirone followed with an RBI double to left to score Cotraro and give the Beacons an 11-8 advantage.
UMass Boston put the game away in the eighth. Aidan Blake (Lakeville, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk and cruised around the base paths after Leung turned on a fastball and crushed it over the left-field wall. With one out and Brown on second, McCormick tripled to the right-center field triangle to make it 14-8. Kydes followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Beacons their largest lead of the game.
Framingham State scratched across two runs in the top of the ninth, when Simonenko singled to center to drive in a pair of runners. Mike Doherty (Brewster, Mass.) came on to get the final out and struck out Anthony Herman to finish the game.
