Men's Hockey Sweeps Past Johnson & Wales 6-2

PAWTUCKET, R.I.—Six different Beacons scored, to lead UMass Boston men's hockey past Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) 6-2 on Friday night at Lynch Arena.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston scored three goals in a 6:28 span of the second period to blow the game open and recorded at least one goal in all three periods.

Nick Albano (Beverly, Mass.), Chris Peters (Fairport, N.Y.) and Billy Grant (Mansfield, Mass.) paced the Beacons with a goal and an assist apiece. Senior Daniel Nachbaur (Richland, Wash.) added a team-high two assists.

Andy Walker (Mason, Mich.), Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) and Derek Caruso (Port Washington, N.Y.) also scored in the victory.

In net, freshman Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) made nine saves on 11 shots. He improved to 4-4 on the year with the win.

Graham Day and Craig Hessenius both scored for the hosts and Jake Glod picked up two assists.

Johnson & Wales goalie Mike Rockwell Jr. made 40 saves on 46 shots over the opening 55:46. Mike Camasso came on and made one stop in the final 4:14.

UMass Boston dominated the opening frame (18-1 in shots), but could only manage one goal against Rockwell.

It was nearly a scoreless first period until Walker kept the puck in the JWU zone, passed it to Grant, who gave it back to Walker and he beat Rockwell Jr. with 1:35 left in the period.

The Beacons blew the game open in the first 8:48 of the second stanza.

UMass Boston opened the scoring at 2:20 of the period. Nachbaur passed it out to Peters at the top of the left faceoff circle, he skated in, slid the puck to Nitkin and he beat Rockwell glove side.

The Beacons extended their lead to 3-0 with a power-play tally at 5:28. Nachbaur passed it over to Jeffrey Skinner (Houston, Texas) at the top, Skinner faked the slapshot, slid it over to Grant on the right point and he beat Rockwell with a one-timer.

The visitors closed out the scoring spree at 8:48. With the Beacons on a two-on-one breakaway, Albano brought the puck down the right side, slide it to the left and Peters chipped it in.

Johnson & Wales answered with a power-play goal less than 30 seconds later, but the Beacons added one final goal before the end of he period. With the Beacons on the penalty kill, Nick Daluisio (Aston) fed Caruso and he beat Rockwell through the five-hole at 16:53.

The Beacons pushed their lead to 6-1 at 4:59 of the third. Evan Rochowiak (Livonia, Mich.) fed Albano for a one-time feed.

Johnson & Wales closed out the scoring at 16:51, when Hessenius recorded a power-play tally.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston outshot Johnson & Wales 47-11, including 18-1 in the first and 15-3 in the third period. The Beacons led 33-21 in face-offs.
  • With his two points, Albano moved past All-American Bill Innocent ('92) for second-place in program history for points by a defenseman (82). He sits six points shy of All-American Tyler Bishop ('17) for the all-time record (88).
  • UMass Boston finished 1-4 on the power-play, while Johnson & Wales finished 1-2.
  • The Beacons improved to 10-2 this season when scoring first and 11-0 when scoring five or more goals.
  • UMass Boston improved to 10-0 all-time against Johnson & Wales. The Beacons have outscored the Wildcats 26-8 in four meetings since JWU joined the New England Hockey Conference.
  • With the win, UMass Boston sits in fifth-place in the NEHC Standings with three games to play. The Beacons are three points behind Hobart and New England College for third-place and three points ahead of Skidmore College and the University of Southern Maine for sixth.

WHO'S NEXT

UMass Boston is scheduled to play Suffolk University on Saturday at 7 p.m. in their final road game of the regular season. The Rams NEHC contest against Babson College on Friday night was postponed due to Zamboni issues.
