HOW IT HAPPENED

The Statesmen raced out to a 4-1 second-period lead and added two empty-net goals, in a rematch of last year's New England Hockey Conference Semifinals.

Beacons freshman defenseman Joe Petruzzella (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recorded his first collegiate goal and multi-point game in the loss. The freshman tied the game midway through the second period and then set up Jeffrey Skinner's (Houston, Texas) goal midway through the second.

Bailey MacBurnie (Beverly, Mass.) and Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) split time in net for the Beacons. MacBurnie got the start and made 13 saves on 16 shots, before being pulled after 25:41. Best came on for the final 33:09 and stopped 16 of 17 shots.

Travis Schneider and Alec Robitaille each recorded a goal and an assist in the win for the Statesmen. In net, Liam Lascelle made 27 saves on 29 shots in his first start of the season.

Hobart's Will Harrison opened the scoring at the 3:21 mark of the first period. Crashing the net, he banged home a rebound from directly in front of the cage for his third goal of the season. Dan Sliney and Andrew Longo were credited with assists on the goal. Sliney had the initial shot, a wraparound attempt, stuffed by MacBurnie.

UMass Boston tied the game at the 10:27 mark of the third period. Petruzzella fired a shot through traffic past Lascelle for his first collegiate goal. Ryan Rowland (Manahawkin, N.J.) and Derek Caruso (Port Washington, N.Y.) were credited with assists on the power-play goal.

Ryan Lynch gave Hobart a 2-1 lead with his fourth tally of the season. He took advantage of a rebound and flipped the shot into the back of the net. Coffey and Robitaille were credited with assists on the goal.

The Statesmen took control of the game in the second period, outshooting the Beacons 15-8. Julien Denicourt scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the period. He snapped a shot from the point through a screen inside the left goal post. His second goal of the season was set up by Coffey and Schneider. Five minutes later, Schneider added a goal of his own off a feed from Aaron Maguyon. Maguyon emerged from a scrum along the boards with the puck. He poked it ahead to Schneider, who avoided a diving Best, and wristed the shot into the vacated cage.

At the 11:58 mark of the second period, the Beacons cut into Hobart's lead with another power-play goal. Skinner beat Lascelle with a wrist shot from the low slot for his sixth goal of the season. Nick Albano (Beverly, Mass.) and Petruzzella were credited with assists on the goal.

The Beacons nearly made it a one-goal game with six minutes remaining in the game, but Lascelle made a glove save on a Daniel Nachbaur's (Richland, Wash.) shot from the left-faceoff circle.

Hobart iced the game with a pair of empty-net goals late in the third period off the sticks of junior TJ Schultz and Robitaille.
