BOSTON, Mass. – Baseball continued their winning ways as they cruised to a pair of mercy rule wins as they defeated Castleton University by the finals of 10-0, 10-0 both in eight innings Saturday afternoon at Monan Park in a Little East Conference doubleheader on senior day.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 10, Castleton University 0 (8 inns.)
UMass Boston 10, Castleton University 0 (8 inns.)

UMass Boston (26-10, 13-3 Little East Conference)
Castleton University (16-19, 7-9 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the third straight conference doubleheader, senior Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) was unstoppable as he finished 6-for-8, with three RBI, six runs scored one double, two triples and two home runs.  Along with, Herzog's monster offensive day, the Beacons pitching staff dominated the Spartans as they surrendered just five hits on the day, all of which were singles.  The Beacons featured just four hurlers in the sweep.  They combined for nine strikeouts and allowed just six walks respectively.

GAME ONE – UMB 10, CU 0 (8 INNS.)

In the opener, the Beacons scored a run in every inning but three, which included a three-run opening inning.  In UMB's first at-bat, Herzog crushed a solo shot over the left field wall.  Nick Cotraro then knocked-in a pair of runs on a double to left center.

The second inning saw UMB make it a 4-0 ball game thanks to an RBI groundout by Josh Lopez (New London, Conn.).  Danny Brown (Hudson, N.H.) knocked-in the Beacons fifth run of the opener on an RBI single to right field.

UMB tacked-on three more runs in the sixth thanks to a solo shot from Ryan McCormick, another RBI groundout by Lopez, and a wild pitch which plated Herzog.  The mercy rule win was secured in the eighth following a pinch hit RBI double from Kyle Penney (Tolland, Conn.) and a Eddie Riley (Quincy, Mass.) single to center field.

Fernando Burgos (Hyde Park, Mass.) improved to 6-0 on the year after going seven complete innings.  He allowed just one hit during his outing, while only walking two and striking out six.  Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.) registered an inning of work and did not allow a hit in his final regular season appearance at Monan Park.

GAME TWO – UMB 10, CU 0 (8 INNS.)

The Beacons got seven of their 10 runs in the first two innings of game two.  A pair of runs came off of RBI singles, while they scored their final two runs of the opening inning on a bases loaded walk and a sac-fly by Ryan McCormick.

Boudrias, Nick Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.), and Brown each recorded RBI singles to make it a seven-run game in the bottom of the second.  Herzog would put UMB just one run away from the mercy rule as the senior crushed another moon shot home run over the left field wall which made it 9-0.

The deciding run came in the eighth on an RBI single by McCormick as the junior ripped the ball through the right side.

Tylor Arruda (New Bedford, Mass.) collected his sixth win (6-1) after allowing just four hits in seven innings of work.  The righty had three K's and walked three Spartans.  Mike Doherty (Brewster, Mass.) ended the contest with a shutdown eighth inning.
