No. 8/8 Baseball Cruises Past Babson For Ninth Straight Win

Box Score

Release written by student intern Dylan Porcaro

BOSTON, Mass. – Tylor Arruda (New Bedford, Mass.) matched his career-high for strikeouts with five, and allowed one run over six innings to lead the eighth-ranked Beacons to a 11-2 win over Babson College Thursday afternoon at Monan Park.

UMass Boston (20-5)
Babson College (18-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a tough first inning, in-which the Beavers scored their first run of the day, Arruda settled in nicely on the hill for UMB.  The righty retired eight straight batters through the fifth inning, as he limited one of the top hitting teams in New England.

While getting the job done on the hill, Arruda got some support at the plate thanks to a combined six-runs through the first two innings.  After the first two Beacons reached base safely, Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) got a chance to erase the 1-0 deficit. With one swing of the bat, the senior crushed a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 3-0 through one.

Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.), Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.), and Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y) each contributed to the scoreboard in the second inning with an RBI a-piece.

Alex Carusotto (Pittsfield, Mass.) took over on the mound to start the seventh inning with the Beacons still ahead 6-1. Although he allowed a couple of base runners he was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run.

The Beacons exploded in the home half of the seventh with four more runs to seal the non-conference decision.  With the bases loaded, Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) doubled to left center plating all three Beacons base runners.  Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) then singled and drove in pinch runner, Nick Cotraro (Beverly, Mass.) who replaced Boudrias at second base.

Mike Doherty (Brewster, Mass.) entered the game in the eighth inning and despite allowing a lead-off one-run homer to Ryan Arena, settled down and minimized any further damage by retiring the next three batters.

Herzog recorded another RBI when he drove in Fowler in the bottom of the eighth inning on a base hit to left field, making the score 11-2.

As usual, the Beacon's closer Bobby Tramondozzi (Peaobody, Mass.) came in to finish things off in the ninth. Babson went down in order, as they saw their 11-game win-streak come to an end.

Ben Aleixo was handed the loss for the Beavers after allowing five runs on five hits in one inning of work.  Peter Fineman gave Babson a solid five innings of relief and allowed just one run on three hits, and had two strikeouts.  Tyler Bell led the Babson pitching staff with three K's in just one inning of work.
