Lacrosse Falls to MIT in Home Opener

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – A 14-0 run over the final three quarters carried MIT to a 18-8 win over lacrosse in the Beacons 2018 home opener at James Cotter Field Wednesday afternoon.

MIT (1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a solid first quarter from the Beacons, which saw them earn a 5-3 lead, MIT quickly responded with a one-sided run that took UMB out of the contest.  The Beacons could not answer back over the second and third quarters especially, which allowed the Engineers to take a comfortable 15-5 lead.  The Beacons scoreless drought came to an end in the fourth on a Dalton Ring goal (Holliston, Mass.), but any type of comeback was stopped by MIT's goalie Victor Fink.

In the opening frame, the Beacons saw four different players find the back of the cage.  Joe Mauceri (Scituate, Mass.) tied the game at 1-1 at the 7:54 mark on an unassisted play.  Clay Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) then tacked on his first of two goals in the first, three on the day for the senior attackman.  Josh Holmes (Weymouth, Mass.) also found the back of the net, while Adam Cariveau (Hudson, Mass.) scored the second UMB man-up goal to close out the first quarter.

From there MIT took over as they could not miss on every single offensive possession.  The Beacons defense tried to counter, but could not come-up with a key stop when needed.  Jack Strachan and Jacob Stein did a majority of the work for MIT.

Fink ended the contest 13 stops to collect his first victory of the season.  Alex Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.) was handed the loss after making just six stops, while allowing 16 of the 18 goals.  Cameron Dixson (Wayland, Mass.) closed out Wednesday's frigid game.

Tom Redmond (Scituate, Mass.) and Jacob Sinclair-Steeves (North Reading, Mass.) each recorded seven face-off wins for the Beacons.  MIT's Dylan Marlborough finished 11-for-19 on the face-off "X".  Tommy Wilber, Jr. (Walpole, Mass.) finished with a game-high four ground balls.  Senior Jack Dillon (Barrington, R.I.) combined for a team-best four caused turnovers.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The two teams each recorded 33 shots, with the Engineers finishing with 24-21 advantage in shots on goal
  • The Beacons were 11-for-15 on clear attempts, while MIT when 15-for-18
