BOSTON, Mass.—Senior Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) had two hits and two RBI and five #3/5 UMass Boston pitchers allowed just seven hits, to lead the Beacons past Brandeis University Monday afternoon at Monan Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons struck for three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. UMass Boston tacked on one more run in the fifth and used great pitching to move to 2-0 for the first time since 2014.

Fowler led the way offensively by reaching safely in all four trips to the plate. The senior first baseman went 2-2 with two runs, two RBI, a walk and a hit by pitch.

Junior Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.) added three hits and an RBI, while sophomore Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) tacked on two hits and the Beacons' final RBI.

On the mound, junior Fernando Burgos (Boston, Mass.) got the start and pitched three scoreless innings, while striking out four. After the Judges got one run against senior Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.), sophomore Ben Gottesman (Acton, Mass.) threw three scoreless innings to earn his first career win.

Juniors Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.) and Bobby Tramondozzi (Peabody, Mass.) pitched the final two innings to close out the win.

Dan O'Leary and Luke Hall each had two hits for the Judges, who started seven freshmen in their lineup. Freshman Dan Frey had the team's lone RBI, while fellow freshman Isaac Fossas finished with a hit and a run scored.

Senior Sean O'Neill took the loss after allowing three earned runs in three innings. The senior righty who beat the Beacons a year ago, allowed five hits and struck out five.

Sophomore lefty Greg Tobin gave up two hits and one earned run over the final five frames.

UMass Boston scored three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of Brandeis miscues. After a pair of errors put two on with one out, Fowler cracked a double over the shortstop's head to score Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) and Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.). Herzog followed with an RBI single to right-center field to make it 3-0 after just five batters.

The Beacons loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning, but O'Neill got an inning-ending strikeout to close out his outing.

Brandeis struck for their only run of the game in the fourth inning. After Fossas singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, Frey dribbled a double just underneath Fowler's glove at first base to score Fossas. Frosceno settled down from that point and retired the next three batters to keep the score at 3-1.

UMass Boston extended their lead back to three runs in the fifth. Fowler was hit by a pitch with two down and moved to second on a Herzog bunt single. McCormick followed with a line-drive single up the middle to score Fowler with two outs.

The visitors had their best chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh. O'Leary and Hall opened the inning with back-to-back singles, but pinch hitter Donie Weiss was called out for bunting a ball while he was out of the batter's box. With one out and the runners still at first and second, Gottesman induced a double play ball to shortstop to get out of the jam.

The Judges put the leadoff runner on in the ninth, but Eddie Riley (Quincy, Mass.) made a nice pick at third base to start a double play to wipe out a possible rally.

BY THE NUMBERS

• With the win, UMass Boston has now defeated every team they've played at Monan Park. The Judges had previously been 2-0 against UMass Boston at Monan. The Beacons are now 33-9 in two-plus seasons at their third-year ballpark.
• Tramondozzi tied the program record for saves in the win. His eight career saves are tied with Daniel Heefner ('14) for the program mark.
• Gottesman has allowed three hits and one walk in five scoreless innings this season. He has already thrown more innings in two outings as a sophomore, then he did in five outings as a freshman (4.1 innings pitched).
• The Beacons 4-5-6 hitters combined for all seven hits, all four RBI and two of the Beacons' four runs scored.
• Frosceno made his first appearance on the mound since the NCAA Regionals during his sophomore season.
• Junior transfer Reynaldo Moreta (Boston, Mass.) made his Beacons' debut as a pinch hitter in the victory.
