Baseball Suffers 3-1 Setback Against Suffolk

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Suffolk's Ryan Pordes held baseball to just one run on five hits as the righty carried the Rams to a 3-1 win over the Beacons Wednesday evening at Monan Park.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, Suffolk University 3

UMass Boston (10-6)
Suffolk University (6-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Rams used an early run in the top of the first, then added two more in the fourth to sneak by with the non-conference decision.  With Pordes shutting down the Beacons bats, Suffolk was able to hang on to earn their first-ever win in Monan Park.

In eight innings of work Pordes allowed just three hits, all singles, and finished the night with six strikeouts and no walks.  The Beacons lone run of the night, which was an RBI single by Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) in the bottom of the ninth, was the only blemish for closer Chuck Gibson, who picked-up his first save of the year.

Fernando Burgos (Hyde Park, Mass.) was handed his first loss of the season, after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits.  He allowed four walks and fanned three.

Defensively the Beacons struggled in key situations as they were charged with three errors in the contest.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Beacons and Rams split their regular season series with Thursday's decision; UMB defeated the Rams 6-5 on March 25 on a Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) walk-off in the ninth
  • With the series split, UMass Boston is now 5-3 against the Rams since the 2006 season
  • Thursday's game marked the second time in the last five games that the Beacons were held to just five hits
  • It was also the second time this season that they were held to just one run; dropped a 3-1 decision to Brandeis on March 6

WHO'S NEXT

The Beacons were scheduled to face Worcester State University tomorrow afternoon, but that game has been postponed.  A make-up date has not been announced.  UMB's next schedule contest after that is for this Saturday at Rhode Island College.  First pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. in Providence.
