HOW IT HAPPENED

UMass Boston jumped on top, scoring three times in the opening frame.  With one out, the Beacons loaded the bases, setting up Nick Herzog (Riverhead, N.Y.), who doubled to left field, which plated two runs. Following a hit batter, Charlie Huegi (Sandy Hook, Conn.) beat out an infield single, scoring Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) with the third run of the inning.

Alex Toomey made it 3-1 with a one-out base hit in the bottom of the first off starter Joey Rogers (Dighton, Mass.). Salem State edged closer in the second as Tyler Galimi knocked-in Colton Fontaine with a base hit, making the score 3-2 in favor of UMass Boston.

Fowler's single extended the lead to 4-2 in the fourth. A Luke Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.) double in the sixth chased Vikings' starter Jose Martinez.  Joshua Bell, who replaced Martinez, allowed a single before Dan Mantoni's (Northbridge, Mass.) two-run base hit made the score 6-2. A sacrifice fly by Herzog extended the lead to 7-2. Martinez went five innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Meanwhile, Rogers settled in, not allowing a run or hit after the second inning to improve to 2-0 on the season. Mantoni finished the day 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI for the Beacons.

Joe Kasper added a pair of hits for the Vikings. Ryan Kellerher pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the Vikings, allowing two hits with a walk and strikeout.
