Baseball Cruises To Shutout Win over Roger Williams

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Led by a career-best showing from freshman lefty Joey Rogers (Dighton, Mass.) baseball made quick work of Roger Williams University as the Beacons earned an 8-0 win Wednesday afternoon at Paolino Field.

Roger Williams University (9-17)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the longest outing by a Beacons pitcher this season, Rogers was nearly untouchable all afternoon.  Through eight complete innings, the freshman allowed just four hits, all singles, and one walk.  The Dighton native recorded a career-high seven strikeouts and forced seven flyouts, and eight groundouts.

After three scoreless innings, the Beacons gave their pitcher some breathing room in the fourth as they tacked on a pair of runs.  They would then plate four runs in the seventh, and two more in the eighth to collect their fourth straight win.

In the fourth, an Eddie Riley (Quincy, Mass.) RBI single to left center ended the scoreless draw as he drove in Nick Herzog who led off the inning with a single to right center.  Ryan McCormick (Cumberland, R.I.) then plated the Beacons second run of the affair on a sac-fly to center field.

In the seventh inning the Beacons would load the bases and would take advantage of back-to-back errors by Roger Williams to jump out to a 4-0 lead.  Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) would then walk in the fifth run of the afternoon, while a Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.) RBI groundout to third made it a six-run ball game

UMass Boston capped-off their win in the eight with an RBI fielder's choice by Charlie HuegiEddie Riley would then come home on a walk to Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) to close out the scoring.

Closing out the win for UMass Boston in the ninth was Joe Maguire (Peabody, Mass.).  The righty would collect back-to-back outs to start the inning.  A Beacons error followed by a single by Roger Williams would put runners on first and second.  However, that would be as far as they would get as Maguire fanned the final batter of the contest.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.) extended his hit-streak to 14 games as he went 1-for-5
