CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A seven goal second quarter proved to be the deciding factor as MIT handed lacrosse a 17-9 non-conference loss Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Beacons closed out the first quarter with a 5-4 lead, thanks to four unanswered goals, two of which were man-up, the Engineers regained the lead with a quick 2-0 surge of their own in the second.  The Beacons tied the score at 6-6 thanks to a man-up goal by Sam Matton.  Unfortunately, the Engineers would own the remainder of the quarter as they scored five straight to head into the break with a 11-6 lead.

The Engineers would then outscore the Beacons 6-3 over the final two frames to secure the non-conference decision.  Clay Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Josh Holmes (Weymouth, Mass.) each found the back of the cage in the third, while in the fourth it was Adam Cariveau (Hudson, Mass.) scoring the lone marker for UMB.

Cariveau finished the contest with two goals and two assists, while Arnold led the attack with three goals and one assist.

Anthony Tortora (Medford, Mass.) led the team in ground balls with four.  Kroy Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the defense with two of the team's five caused turnovers.

Jack Strachan and Mitch Turley led the Engineers attack with three goals and two assists each.

Between the pipes AJ Collette (West Springfield, Mass.) was handed the loss.  Alex Surette (Melrose, Mass.), finished with nine stops on 20 shots. 

Matt Murphy (Watertown, Mass.) finished with 11 face-off wins, while Kroy Arnold posted three on nine attempts.  Dylan Marlborough won all 16 face-offs for MIT.  MIT finished 19-for-22 on clear attempts, while the Beacons went 9-for-14. 

BY THE NUMBERS

• Combined there was 20 penalties called between the two teams on Saturday
• Saturday's contest marked the first for the Beacons since March 9 when they were handed a 14-7 loss at Nichols College
• The hat trick by Clay Arnold marked the second of the year for the junior transfer
• Saturday's contest marked the first meeting between MIT and UMB since 2013 when the Beacons dropped a 17-6 decision in Cambridge
