Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—MIT scored a goal in each half and limited UMass Boston men's soccer to just six shots on goal, in a 2-0 Engineers non-conference victory Wednesday night at Steinbrenner Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman Loukas Carayannopoulos scored his team-leading seventh goal and added an assist, to help MIT earn their second-shutout win over the Beacons in three years.
Ivan Jutamulia tacked on the other goal for the hosts, who snapped a three-game scoreless streak.
UMass Boston sophomore goalie Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.) made five saves on seven shots to fall to 3-1 on the season.
For the Engineers, Jeremy Cowham stopped all five shots he faced and his defense was also credited with a team save.
MIT went ahead at 38:55 off a long thrown-in. Carayannopoulos's throw-in found Jutamulia who flicked it on past Carter from six-yards out.
UMass Boston senior Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) nearly tied the game before the break. On a free kick from 25-yards out, Morales sent a blistering shot that Cowham was able to tip wide with a diving save.
Carter kept the game at 1-0, 15 minutes into the second half. Carlos Hernandez headed a ball that looked like it was going just under the bar, but Carter leaped to his left and palmed the ball over the bar.
The Engineers put the game out of reach in the 85th minute. Logan McLaughlin sent a low cross in from the near side and Carayannopoulos's one-timed a shot just inside the far post.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The two teams finished the game tied 13-13 in shots. MIT held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal, while the Beacons led 3-1 in corner kicks.
- UMass Boston is ranked eighth in the first NCAA New England Regional Rankings.
- MIT improved to 12-5-1 all-time against the Beacons. The two teams have played in each of the past three years, with the winner posting a shutout in all three games.
- Jake Higgins (Pembroke, Mass.) and Raffi DeSouza (Watertown, Mass.) led the Beacons with three shots apiece.
