HOW IT HAPPENED
After a sluggish first half, UMass Boston opened up and scored three goals over the final 40 minutes to improve to 2-0 for the second-consecutive season.
Barros led the charge offensively for UMass Boston with his first goal and assist of the season. Freshman Ocane Williamson (Spanish Town, Jamica) and Jake Davenport (Weymouth, Mass.) also found the back of the net for UMass Boston. Khang set up the Beacons' first and third goals for his first two assists of the 2016 season.
In net, Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) completed his second-consecutive collegiate shutout by making three saves.
Wentworth goalie Matthew Sekerak fell to 1-1 on the season after making eight saves on 11 shots.
UMass Boston struggled to get anything going in the first half, before making several key changes just before and after halftime-that changed the complexion of the game. Senior captain Miguel Alcantar (Tijuana, Mexico), sophomore Jonathan Cardoso (Fogo, Cape Verde) and Barros all came off the bench and helped the Beacons dominate possession in the matchup between cross-town foes.
The Beacons opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. UMass Boston came up with a turnover inside the Leopards end and Khang fed a cutting Barros inside the box; Barros continued his run towards the near post and then sliced a soft shot across the body of the onrushing goalie just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
UMass Boston carried the momentum over from the goal and began to press the Leopards back within their own end. The Beacons got the insurance goal they were looking for at 70:29. Barros sent a through ball to the top of the box and Williamson turned his defender, before chipping a shot past the goalie who had charged well out of his net.
Davenport made it 3-0 at 85:32, when Khang fed him in the center of the 18-yard box and he easily slotted home into the far left corner.
