Box Score
BOSTON, Mass. – Led by Bobby Tramondozzi's (Peabody, Mass.) 3.2 innings of relief, the Beacons got back on the winning track in a big way as they defeated the hard hitting Vikings of Salem State University by the final of 13-9 Tuesday evening at Monan Park.
THE BASICS
UMass Boston 13, Salem State University 9
UMass Boston (11-11)
Salem State University (9-12-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a wild first 4.5 innings, which saw the two teams combine for 21 runs, Tramondozzi came in and shutdown the Vikings potent offense. While on the hill, the righty allowed just one run, on one hit and struck out three to earn his third win of the year. Manny Garcia (Boston, Mass.) came in the ninth to collect the save, his third of the year, despite some late inning dramatics, as the Vikings loaded the bases.
Offensively, UMass saw production from Charlie Huegi (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Kyle Boudrias (Medford, Mass.), as the duo drove in seven of the Beacons 13 runs respectively. Junior Dan Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) also knocked in a pair of runs, as the Beacons ended their three game skid from the weekend.
UMass put the first dent on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second, as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead, thanks to a wild pitch which scored Ryan Olivo (Rochester, N.Y.), and a sac-fly by Huegi. Boudrias then made it a 5-0 ball game thanks to his three run double to deep right center in the third.
The Vikings cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth as they put-up three runs of their own to make it 5-3. UMass Boston wasted little time gaining some breathing room, as they knocked in a combined eight runs in the bottom half of the same inning.
Steve Witkowski who started off Tuesday's contest, went four complete innings. The sophomore righty allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits, and three K's in the no-decision.
Down but not out, Salem State tried to claw their way back into the contest, as they drove in five runs in the top of the fifth to make it 13-8 with plenty of baseball left to play. After Corey Giguere (Blackstone, Mass.) was able to get the second out of the fifth, Tramondozzi came in and carried the Beacons through the next 3.1.
The final run of the night came off of the bat of the Vikings biggest power hitter Mike Davis, who crushed a solo shot over the Monster Wall in left to make it a four-run affair (13-9) at the time.
