HOW IT HAPPENED
Keeping the game close until the Beacons offensive surge was righty pitcher Bryan Kaufman, who dealt one of his best games ever for the Beacons. Through eight complete innings, Kaufman (Farmingdale, N.Y.) held Curry to just the two runs on seven hits, but managed an impressive seven strikeouts in the victory, his first of the year.
The game quickly turned in favor of the Beacons in the sixth inning as the Beacons unloaded a season-high six runs in the inning. They then tacked on a run in the seven and eighth before sealing the victory in the ninth with three more runs.
Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) was the Beacons biggest offensive threat as he drove in three runs on two hits, while also accounting for one run. Sal Frosceno (Derby, Conn.) was just as impressive offensive, as the sophomore went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Steve Consiglio (Southbury, Conn.), who has seen a ton of action on the hill for the Beacons closed out the ninth with one strikeout.
The Beacons first run of the afternoon came off the bat of Lionel Danielson (Saint Croix, Virgin Islands), which at the time cut Curry's lead in half (2-1) in the top of the fourth.
After a scoreless fifth, UMass came alive in the sixth first tying the game at 2-2 on a bases loaded hit by pitch. From there Dave Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.) and Searles drove in a combined three runs on RBI singles. From there Ray Zincone (West Warwick, R.I.) and Luke Nagle (Pembroke, Mass.) each knocked in a run for the Beacons to give them firm control of the lead.
Searles then drove in his third run of the game on a sac-fly in the seventh, while Frosceno made it 9-2 in the eighth on an RBI single. In the ninth, UMass cruised to the victory with a sac-fly, balk, and an RBI groundout by Chris Fowler (Barnstable, Mass.).
